So I'm thinking about upgrading from onboard audio to a dedicated sound card. I'm not looking to do anything fancy with it; I just want better sound for gaming and whatnot. Anyone have any recommendations? Right now I'm considering an X-Fi Titanium, but if there are cheaper cards that work fine for general purpose stuff (or better cards for the same price range) I'd like to know.

I'd get this, because its PCI-X, and it comes with the front CD-Bay interface which I love

Problem is its a pricey... without the front ports, its still $150

The CD-bay is pretty cool, but I don't think I'd really need it, and it's more than I'm willing to spend. From what I can tell, the only difference between the Fatality X-Fi Titanium and the regular one is that it has XRAM, which has basically no support anymore and doesn't add a noticeable difference in sound quality.

I'm also looking at an ASUS soundcard that is supposedly about the same quality but has a mail-in rebate.

I haven't heard much about their stand alone soundcards, but the one thing Ive complained about on their motherboards is the on-board sound sucks Sad

But Id say go for it, their warranties are amazing

I Got a HT | Omega Claro. Love it and its still going. Start by figuring out what slots you have available on your mobo then go from that. I used to have a sound blaster on the computer before this one... they where fine but they didn't feel that good. I also had some specifics I wanted to make sure i got for capture so I went with HT | Omega.

Did you have any specific type of output you where looking for? If you are looking for HT setup did you have any specific encodings you wanted? Also budget?

i really liked the razer ear phones i had before and after my cat got ahold of those i got this.  This is a soundcard/headphone combo thing.  Not as customizable as say a dedicated sound card, but im not an audiophile bastard using oxygen free virgin copper.  everything is controlled via the sound card box and they sound better than the onboard sound/old razer set i was using. so if you dont want to fuck with shit id recommend these.
