Probably because they don't have the money to pay a programmer/developer to remove the requirement. They're down to a single dev maintaining it now if i recall correctly.

D2D is $20 last I checked, a subscription is $15/month, so its a $5 game really when you look at it since it comes with a free month

Try running it as a credit card instead of debit?  Dunno if that option exists.  Some states have laws against debit cards and mandate everything be treated as credit.
