So my 360 just red ringed. It was on, running just fine for a few minutes. I loaded up a game (off of disc), and walked away while it loaded. I started to smell something weird (like smoke), but honestly didn't think anything of it for a few seconds. Then I looked at my 360, and sure enough it had the red ring (It may have been flashing, but I actually forget already...). I turned the console off, waited a minute or so, and turned it back on. Seems to boot up just fine again, but I didn't dare load a game. Turned it back off, and unplugged it.
Thoughts? |

If it was 3 red rings, you're pretty much screwed; it's only a matter of time. But if you bought it within the past 3 years it's still under warranty for that.

So my friend's 360 Red-ringed quite a while ago. It wasn't under warranty, so it would cost him $140 to get it repaired. His family is literally just a step above being poor, so I thought I'd send it in to get fixed for his birthday. I didn't know the cost of it until now, and I can't really afford that either. I saw this and was wondering if it was worth a shot. Any experience from you guys?

Worst case get a new 360 instead of repairing, includes new warranty. Just remove the hard drive and stash it in a safe place until you confirm that the console is working. |

the writing for that is hilarious

It was an arcade, but then you stuff a HD on it and enjoy. Since you should already have a HDD. Looks like BestBuy has referb Arcades for $130: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Xbox+-+360+A...823&loc=01 Plus you also get a new controller, that's like a $40 value right there. |

This guide is pretty good. |
