I stopped doing that for my co-workers en gratis as well, it started out with me offering to fix my buddy's laptop because I had done the repair that it required before on another laptop. (replacement of power plug on mobo)
Ended up with a bunch of them bringing in computers of their familys and friends over time, when eventually I said to someone who asked me to repair yet another friends computer in the traditional mealy-mouthed way of asking but not asking "Jee, that sucks man, I hope you can get it fixed!" Turns out he had said to his buddy "Hey man I got this coworker who can fix anything computer for free, and he gets it done like overnight!" Boy did I make him look like a jackass. I enjoyed it~~ |

this happened when I worked IT. But there were usually 3 of us in the office, and the employees didn't take too hard of advantage of it. Definitely not bringing in third parties computers. We had a sign posted, "WILL WORK FOR BAKED GOODS." So we always got a batch of brownies or cookies out of the deal. That and we didn't do shit overnight. "want it done fast? take it to someone who's not working for student wages"

Advice is one thing. It shows you're actually taking an interest and trying to fix it yourself.
Trying to give someone your PC and say 'fix it' without compensating them at all, thats asshattery.
