Mumble Tutorial - The address is mumble.brbuninstalling.com and the port is 7454.

Mumble is the voice communication software of choice for BRB,U.
Why? Because it's the only cool, open source and free VoIP program of it's kind. TeamSpeak and Ventrillo, you must rent from a provider that pays licensing fees and crap. We can throw a daemon on a server and provide it for free.

However it doesn't always work the first time for everyone, so here's a guide.

You want to download the newest version from http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
As of writing, this is version 1.2.3. It will change, and Mumble automatically updates.

After you have downloaded Mumble, install.
It's the standard Next, Agree, Next, Next, Install, Finish affair.

Now launch Mumble!

The first window will be the Introduction. Click next.

You will now see the device selection dialog. The defaults here should work. If you talk into your mic, you should hear yourself in your speakers.
If you do not, try alternate devices from the menus. There should be an obvious choice like 'Microphone' for input and 'Speakers' for output.
You should uncheck 'Positional Audio' and 'Attenuate applications while other users talk' is optional.

Click Next.

In the device tuning dialog, try lowering the slider all the way to the left. If the voice starts to jitter, slide back to the right a bit.
Click next when you are ready.

In the volume tuning window, defaults should be good because we will NOT be using voice activation.
Click Next.

This dialog is very important. Here you must select 'Push To Talk' and then click in the box to the left.
The next key or button you press is what will transmit your voice.
Click Next when ready.

The defaults for the Quality and Notifications should be sufficient.
Click Next.

Final screen for the initial setup! Uncheck the Anonymous statistics if you want, Click Finish.

OK! You are ready to Mumble! You should still be in the Mumble Server Connect window. If not, click Connect from the Server menu.
Ignore the server browser and click Add New.

Fill out the server details. The address is mumble.brbuninstalling.com and the port is 7454.
Click OK.

Your BRBU server should show up under Favorites. Double click to connect.
If Mumble asks you about a certificate with a failed verification, click Yes.

You are now connected! Double click on a channel to join. We have many different channels for different games.
Just press your PTT button to speak!

Windows 7 Troubleshooting:

Windows 7 has this handy feature that 'temporary' dims the audio of applications if a 'voip' program is in use. The problem is that it tends to go crazy and turn down the volume of everything and not turn it back up.

How to fix:

Open your Control Panel.
Click on Hardware and Sound.
Click on Sound.
In the Sound dialog box, click the last tab, Communications.
Select 'Do Nothing'. Click OK.

Now, it is very likely that windows has already messed with your volume.

From that same Hardware and Sound section of the control panel, click on Adjust system volume.
Open TF2 and mumble. If the volume sliders aren't at the top.... put em there.

And yer done.

FAQ

Q: Why can't I create a channel?
A: Only administrators can create new permanent channels. Registered users are able to create temporary channels.

Q: How do I become a registered user?
A: Pretty easy. After you've connected to our server, right-click on your name in the channel list and select 'Register'. Registering also allows you to reserve your account name and prevent imposters.

I hate that 'feature' so much. For the first six months I used 7 it was off by default, but one day it turned on when I reconnected my headset and I had no idea why the fuck TF2 kept muting (and staying muted)

Heh, as nice as the tutorial for registering is, you can delete it. I've removed that restriction, I was far too tired of listening to people whine about it.

Oh, and the as for why we use it?

Don't come crying to me when some little kiddie you made mad comes in and constantly uses new nicknames and just screams into the mic as loud as he can.

I did everything with my new comp, but when I tried to join the server, it's telling me that I need a pass to join. Is this a secret to no one or am I just derping?

Try using a different name.  On my old computer I signed up when the registration thing was still there, so when I tried it on my new computer I think it asked me for one too.  I just added an underscore at the end of my name.

There is a certificate saved somewhere on your machine for mumble. Delete it.
