you can't really use that as a standard considering people can make careers doing just about anything.

Yeah, but you don't see untrained Mexican immigrants conducting trains, do you? It still requires training. A train is more than just a speed dial simply because it's on a track. There aren't many machines on land that have more momentum than a train, and controlling that is an important job because if something fucks up the train will gladly cause a lot of damage before stopping.
