New Monitor.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a new monitor before I go to college, sick of the crappy half-HDTV half-real monitor setup I have atm. Any recommendations for monitors for monitors? The size doesn't half to be too big, but a 22" or 24" would be nice.

This is what i have  I don't think it's being made anymore, but it was really cheap (i got it for like 150 at staples), looks great, has built in speakers so i can hook up my 360 to it no problem, etc etc.  I'm sure that something similar would be waiting for you at a bestbuy or a staples near you.  Just write down the product code and look at online reviews first.  good cheap monitors are great, bad ones are a waste of money.

Also, you can't go wrong with Asus or Acer, both have extremely extensive product lines for every price point.

Some basic criteria I'd use personally:

HDMI Input

HDCP Capable

LED Backlight (This is available on Asus models all the way down to the cheapest 1080p HDCP stuff now)


>= 50,000:1 contrast ratio (This is almost a given if you use newegg and drill-down using recommended res @ 1920x1080 and HDCP compliant)


If you go with either Asus or Acer, really the only tips you need are buy what you can afford, everything they both make is solid and dependable.

Adjustable stands add like a million dollars to the price, so don't expect pan/rotate/swivel on the stand unless you fork up some dosh. I'd ensure whatever you get has a VESA complaint mount on the rear in case you decide to remount it at some point. My current 23" doesn't and I'm really kicking myself for forgetting to check that when I ordered it.

In my experience, Dell monitors have a lot of tearing, even with low pixel response times. I have an older Dell, and while the tearing sucks, the colors are actually really accurate. So if you're doing some kind of art then it's great, if you're doing gaming, not so much.

I bought a fuck-tonne of the 24" version of that screen for work.
We didn't have a single DOA in an order of 140 units, I don't recall seeing many if at all any dead pixels.

Decent build quality, very bright, above average view angle.

Never used it for video or games, so I cannot confirm MD's observation.

Finding a review that mentions anything about these or related monitors being good for gaming aside from "i play games too it looks good" has proven daunting. I like the no-frills design, no stupid built in speakers, matte finish, and the fully adjustable base, but I don't want to gamble $150 when I could get an Asus monitor with hundreds of positive reviews for a similar price.
