See below. Same kind of crap happened to me when Borderlands came out (which I preordered), and has happened to me consistently with L4D2 since I bought it within maybe a week of release. I think I've played two games of L4D, one game of Killing Floor, and have yet to finish the co-op section of Portal 2.

The lack of players makes the game-mode useless, that's my main gripe.

There are plenty of people to do co-op here. I would love to do some expert campaign work in L4D(2). I just rented Dead Island for the 360 and I think I might buy it. It's pretty badass.

The different infected are imbalanced, but I don't think it matters since it takes teamwork to make effective use of them anyway. You do have to know how not to do stupid shit before trying versus (hence the campaign first comment) and have a good group of people playing who won't ragequit if you make one mistake. After you get a hang of versus, regular campaign becomes easy-mode.

Honestly, it depends on who you play with.
