bc2 wasn't very good though, and bf3 beta showed dice still has no clue on how to write netcode

From my own perspective as a server OP, valve absolutely is the gold standard for how dedicated servers should be run. I have full access to my files and I can do whatever the fuck I want with them.

Want all talk and low gravity? Turn them on

Want friendly fire off on your CS Server, go ahead and turn it off.

Want to install some crazy mod like gun-game of VS. Saxton Hale, install this hook package and get cracking

Remote access to your server? Not a problem

Want more content, here's an SDK, have fun making your own maps



What do you as a community or server op get out of running a BC2 or say, MW server?

Sure there's an off chance that it might bring some people back but you lose any feeling of community between players and the extended shelf life mods provide.

BC2 was absolutely horrible to try to control from an operators perspective, and the allowing of only 4 people on their own little miniature squad based voice comms didn't help.

the glitches were a bigger issue

bc2 ping shows round trip ping, not 1 way like most other games. It will always look worse, triple digit ping in bc2 could be 51 in tf2 or almost any other game
