AVID, from my understanding of the program so far, has the ability to one-up any sort of editing suite out there, but it takes a master of the craft to be able to use it at it's full potential. I've toyed with Final Cut, but I'm mainly coming from Windows Movie maker Sony Vegas. So I'm boned.

Final Cut was starting to make some progress before Apple decided it didn't really want to do post. Not to mention I've never seen a FCP system at any event I've done a rental install for. MTV tends to use FCP because they hire people right out of school for slave wages, and most schools tend to go FCP because it's cheaper. Premiere has actually made pretty huge strides since I last encountered it. I know a few houses that are thinking about going Adobe because of the huge mess Apple made of FCPX.

Yeah, they completely nerfed FCP, which really sucks considering it was getting better. Although I have heard that Apple is working on a FCP 8 with the same flavour as 7, so fingers crossed! MTV wasn't the only post house to use FCP, I know that a lot of the houses that handle the Discovery family use it as well, so it was getting up there (MTV didn't pay me slave anyways... Though I was a cinematographer). I wouldn't be surprised if they switched to Adobe because Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro are the exact same... Literally Apple went and bought the entire Premier team for double their wages at Adobe.

Seriously. Even though I don't like the program, I'm really tempted to pick up a copy of AVID at my school. It's only $300 in the bookstore.

You seriously should! Even if you hate it, it's a huge discount from $2,200. It's good practice anyways, and you can get better and become bi-editorial.

Random Story:

About 5 years ago, my friends and were hanging at his place in Baltimore, doing a little pre-gaming before heading out for the evening. This was December, so it was pretty darn cold out. When we head out the door, we get about halfway down the block when we see this shadowy thing go darting from behind a trashcan nearby. Now, of course, being the city, we assumed it was a rat. Something about the way it moved, though, made us peak behind the boxes it had run behind. Looking over, we see an honest-to-goodness kiwi sitting there. Seeing us looming over it, it ran into some bushes nearby, but we could still see it peeking out. We have absolutely no clue where it came from; it had to be someone's pet that got out, right? At any rate, we figured it was going to freeze to death or get eaten by rats, so we tried to catch it. Unfortunately, it dashed away into a narrow space where we couldn't get it, and that was that. Anyway... strange thing to run into on the streets of Baltimore.

tl;dr - saw a kiwi in baltimore on the sidewalk in the middle of December.
