There is nothing stopping private money from exploring the options. However, at least as far as I've seen, most of the money has been towards adult stem cells as opposed to fetal. 11:35 Socks Greatbacon_work: Just accept the idea of enemas. |

There is nothing stopping private money from exploring the options. However, at least as far as I've seen, most of the money has been towards adult stem cells as opposed to fetal.
GW Bush did this weird thing where federal funding could only be used on the existing embryonic cell lines, of which there were 11 good ones, and then apparently this dropped down to zero by 2005 due to contamination of the lines (thanks wiki!). Also I remember hearing that if you were working on non-approved lines, you couldn't use equipment that had been bought or partially funded by federal money (which would cover pretty much everything unless you're fully funded by an eccentric billionaire). Basically he tried to please his religious constituents, while not completely shutting down research. Politics! The problem with private companies researching stem cells is that this is really really basic science, and your average investor would not likely live long enough to see a return. So, we have this split between federal funding for big, blue-sky research, and private companies funding applied, market-driven research. I think this goes back to WWII, and how we ended up with all these national labs and research centers, combined with trying to keep up with Soviet science. The system is somewhat broken, because even the big fed research projects are only funded on five year cycles, and private research is even more narrowly focused. Also we spend such a tiny amount of money on R&D, even though we get such incredible benefits from research. Well, at least we make interesting advances, whether the science is applied the right way is another story. Case in point: the "green revolution" in crop development, where crop yields dramatically went up due to breeding and fertilizer usage. Unfortunately, this extra food didn't go towards feeding the hungry, it just enabled massive population growth in the third world, the fattest fucking cows imaginable in America, and now ~one billion people are undernourished in the world. I think I just argued against my science is good stance, o well :p |

how long do you think it will be before nintendo introduces another 3ds with an improved design? How much time do you expect to pass before nintendo produces their next new-generation handheld?

Otherwise, they're treading down Sony's path PSP-style. |

Jack of all trades, master of none. Sure it will play games, sure Angry birds is hugely popular on the platform, but if I want to play something with a bit more substance, I'm screwed. Plus, I'd imagine most kids (14 and under) probably don't care about an ipod just yet. |
as long as pokemon rpg's are exclusive to handhelds I think they won't be leaving. Nintendo probably could have released pokemon red and blue on smartphones by now and made a lot of money but they haven't chosen too. |

MP3 files will never jam in a cheap player, never degrade due to a fingerprint, never unravel and hang out of the package like a horrible roadkill accident. I never broke a player through carelessness but I broke my share of physical media. |

It's pretty fragile and if you broke it, you were done listening to that album. Unless you had some special splicing tape, which never worked. So you had to wind the tape back in without a cassette player, because those dives spin both reels and you need to correct the imbalance, and because it only got that horrible prolapse when it was loaded into a malfunctioning player to begin with. A six-sided pencil or Bic Stic pen will fit into that reel hole, and makes an effective tool to spin the reel and hopefully wind the loose tape back up into the cassette. |
