In celebration of Skyrim, I'm grabbing a new graphics card so I can get the last bit I need for recommended settings. I figure this one looks pretty good, and a free copy of Deus Ex is the icing on the cake. Figured I'd ask around and see what you guys have to say about it.

First off, what are your system specs? (excluding current GPU specs of course)
Second, what's your budget for a new card? |

It's pretty hard to bottleneck a card around that range. The other card is a better deal, so it's just your choice of brand. You can't get Deus Ex with any of the newegg cards, but it is cheaper. Plus, going for a better manufacturer isn't bad. ASUS and Gigabyte are highly recommended. |

If you're quoting specs from a similar machine Im going to have to ask you to be more thorough. Also since its a cookie cutter hp box Im having my doubts as to whether or not it has the requisite pci-e 2.1 bus interface on the motherboard.
Gonna have to crack open that box and either take a picture of the mb (you dont have to remove any components) then post it. Or find out which specific motherboard is in your box. |

AMD 785G Chipset does have a PCI-e 2.0, which I have heard should work. (10-07-2011, 07:20 PM)Kirby the Dick link Wrote: PCIe 2.0 = 2.1 [move][/move]

The only thing I warn you about is that you have the right number of those metal slot things available, and that you have enough space for the card itself.

They have a floor model of the machine I use where I plan to buy the card, I can confirm that there's enough space and "Metal Slot Things". [move][/move] |

Another thing you have to figure out is your power supply situation:
A) Can your stock power supply handle the new cards voltage/amperage? B) New graphic cards power connections? May or may not be an issue depending on the card. This card has 2x 6 pin connectors others can have different arrangements and number of power slots required generally based on how powerful they are. Some weaker ones may have none and can be run simply from the power from the pci express slot. You can buy adapters from molex to different pin combos but that depends again on how many molex connections you have on your power supply and if it can handle the power demands the card has.

Just be an awesome nerd like me, get a 400watt PSU and power the GPU exclusively with that. 8)

There were several threads on this already so I didn't feel like starting a new one.
Does this look like a decent card? I'm currently running an 8800gt that seems to have reached it's limits. Feel free to recommend any other cards in the $100-150 price range. |
