The ATF giveth, and the ATF taketh away. On the one hand, they're striving to keep guns out of the reach of self-identified MMJ users, on the other hand, they're letting the violent, the alcoholic, and the god-knows-whatever-else users have their guns back, just 'cuz.

I'll ask you this question. If a person has committed a crime so heinous that they shouldn't be trusted with a firearm after they've "paid their debt" to society, why are they out of prison? Do the petitions for restoration of rights need to be reviewed by a judge? Absolutely. But, I don't see anything wrong with restoring someone's rights after they've been incarcerated.

They used a piss poor example in the article. How do you know the "friend" wasn't raping the female?

No offence Dtrain, but you seem to just be thumping your chest as a gun owner and oafishly denying the facts in that example.

(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister, or of any other person in his or her presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or

    (2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his or her presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which he or she is.

The killing could have been justified.


Playing devils advocate* on a really long limb, lets say the original slaying was in fact, justified, ok?

That gives you the standing and justification to, and I quote, "force Mr. Robinson’s hysterical fiancée, at gunpoint, to help him dispose of the body in a nearby river."


Speaks volumes about the morality and character of a person you would stand up for.


I'll also point out I agree with restoring the gun rights to convicted felons on a case-by-case basis, but I also do wish there was some very heavy-handed restrictions in place to sieve through the pool of applicants. This man, however, was obviously a subject who should have been fervently denied every attempt to regain his rights.





* In all actuality, he probably got into an argument with the guy, put him on his knees or similar and shot him in the head execution style given the events afterwards. What kind of a justified shooting happens point blank in the temple? Remember, they were all heavily intoxicated. I don't see some Hollywood struggle over the gun happening where they both have hands on the gun and one manages to just barely eke the barrel to the other's head and drop the hammer.

He has a point. If you don't trust the guy after coming out of prison (supposedly rehabilitating him and literally serving his sentence for his crime) then why are you letting him out of prison?

I understand both perspectives, and I actually agree more with Didzo than I do with Dtrain on this - I wouldn't want a violent ex-con to have a firearm either - but we make it so hard to reintegrate into society after being released, that how else is the guy going to live? It's crime or starve, in many of these cases.

What do they mean by "confrontation"? Was there an argument? Was it a case of "hey get the fuck off my girlfriend!" then Robinson attacked Zettergen, causing him to retreat and get the gun? Or did he drop the guy to his knees and put one in his head boondock saints style? My point is that we don't know.

Two alternate scenarios:

"After retreating to retrieve his gun, Zettergen, knowing he was a poor shot, maneuvered the weapon to Robinson's head in self defense and fired a lethal shot point blank."

Or maybe Robinson tried to disarm Zettergen with his face. We just don't know. Maybe that whole "history of mental health problems" and friends saying he was dangerous bit was taken out of context by the New York Times and twisted to make him sound like he might be a threat to society.

Then again, this is the first example of many used in the article to get across the point that giving guns to people with a history of violent crimes without some sort of review process doesn't make much sense at all.
