Honestly, I just think we should drop the whole Minecraft whitelist policy. Set up a bot in the server to say a message every once and a while advertising the forums. Just let people play on the damn server and if they wanna check out our discussion board then they can. I don't understand the elitism towards people who post on here just to play on the minecraft server.
I would have brought this up a while ago but I'm not exactly a highly respected member of this forum. If you play on the BRBU minecraft server for a while, you'll find that it's mostly BRBU in name and not much else. Minecraft has always been a source of drama, but at least you knew who you were dealing with when it was primarily BRBU members playing. When you feel like a stranger on your own community's server and the sort of chat that would get muted in a few seconds on Red is the norm, minecraft on the BRBU server can cause more stress than it's worth. I don't know about anyone else, but I've quit the server for months at a time because of this environment. And so, my tolerance for half-assed intro posts by strangers (especially when they were brought here by another stranger) goes down fast.
As far as the posting procedure is concerned, I think it's a good way to weed out lazy potential griefers and add a tiny bit of accountability. Most of the better-crafted intro threads have generally received warm responses overall... I didn't sense much animosity in the first intro you linked directed at anyone other than heavyrocker1989 (who's been around for a year or so --- not quite a newbie). I've seen minecrafters with intro threads lurk or stick around the forum, but never minecrafters who were added directly to the whitelist. The response to Eschatos' friend's thread should have been less harsh, however. |

And this is why I joined the server once like 2 months ago, saw what was going on and never got back on again.

I rarely play minecraft. But when I do, I end up playing on a server with some of my gun owner buddies.

The best way I can put why I don't like what's going on in the MC server is to compare BRBU to a group of people who have access to, say, some tennis courts and a pool, rented by someone's Uncle Rich. Noone has to pay for anything due to the fact that the uncle has more money than sense. For the sake of comparison, let's say everyone in this group has more of a preference to Tennis, but they like to go swimming every so often. After a while, someone invites their cousin who likes to swim, but isn't a big Tennis fan, but he's pretty cool, so we let him sign up for the keys to the pool and courts. We keep a sign outside each of them so that anyone interested can contact the groundskeeper for the area and sign up for the keys.
Eventually, alot of people who like to swim start signing up, and getting their friends to sign up. One day a few of the regulars show up after playing Tennis to go for a swim, only to find about a dozen strangers using the pool, none of the regulars recognize anyone there, essentially, the open sign up list has let another group entirely take over the pool. But that's just my ramblings on the subject, I hope you guys can see why I'm not exactly friendly towards OPWs. [move][/move] |

Case and point, someone who just got on the server went ahead and started breaking shit marked with signs, and then claimed ignorance at the existence of server rules, a server website, or the existence of BRBU.
...Why are guest accounts even allowed to build and destroy in the first place? Doesn't that defeat the whole fucking point anyway? |

(01-09-2012, 03:47 PM)Didzo link Wrote: Case and point, someone who just got on the server went ahead and started breaking shit .... These are all legit issues to discuss with managing the Server and in-game rules, and don't seem to have much to do with the forums or sub-forums. If someone is being a dick in-game, that's an issue that needs to be resolved in-game; whether the dick makes 1 or 100 posts to the forums is immaterial. If you have problems with how the server is being run, you should bring your concerns to the admins/mods/and whoever pays the bill for the server (is that Vera?) Cleaning up the litter in a virtual space takes a lot of work, so if you want to set a certain tone on the server you should consider volunteering to help police it. Regarding the question of whether the Minecraft server should be a pool for the TF2 players to use when they get tired of TF2 tennis: that's a question of philosophy. Certainly, whoever pays for the minecraft server can set whatever rules they want. When it comes to how this was addressed for TF2, on several occasions Caff and Kor and others have made the explicit decision to try to keep the server(s) open to all comers, as a way to continuously try to get new (friendly) blood into the community. That philosophy believes that a community that doesn't keep adding new members is a community that can only shrink and die-out. Having well-run servers is what makes people return to play, and having return players get to know regulars is what gets new people active in the forums. Obviously, the more games we have servers for, the more people can potentially find us. Conversely, if I received a bunch of lip and attitude for requesting access to a new place, I'd wouldn't stick around to see whether or not it was a fun place to play. Yours truly, the guy who only made a destructoid account to play on the original destructoid server, and then only made a "Kor's Sexy Voice" account just to keep playing. |
