Will BRBu and the associated servers have a special anti-SOPA message this Jan 18th?
After all, we are reddit. |

we should shut the servers and website down.

I contact both of my senators at multiple offices once per day and even specifically ask for the staffer (Jennifer) who handles Protect IP for Roy Blunt when I call the DC office. I also call my congressman, Billy Long, but he is pretty awesome and I don't think he will support it: CNN: How to auction off the nation's debt MINECRAFT RULES AND INFORMATION Minecraft Server changing hosts. Do not donate to my NFOservers account because I am cancelling it after this pay period.

Just got an email from my local Representative:
Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts regarding the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) (HR 3261). As you are aware, this legislation aims to crack down on copyright infringement by restricting access to rogue websites that host or facilitate the sharing of pirated content. Rogue websites are sites that are dedicated to stealing intellectual property â trademark and copyright piracy. Unfortunately, this legislation as written also punishes innocent web firms, including intermediaries like search engines, that might contain a link to a foreign website dedicated to online piracy. While I understand that internet piracy is an issue that needs to be dealt with, I believe this legislation goes too far by harming innovation and free speech. By criminalizing links to these sites and forcing companies to take content off the internet, this legislation creates a form of web censorship that I cannot support. Most recently, this legislation has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. Rest assured I will keep your views in mind as Congress continues to work on this issue. Thank you again for your correspondence. Sincerely, Tim Ryan Member of Congress |

We aren't out of the woods yet, now they're trying to sign the ACTA in a few days, it's going to make it legal to monitor every single bit of internet usage you have and scan for copyright infringement. aka, privacy is dead.

The whole business is in trying to protect outmoded distribution networks. The RIAA and MPAA have spent billions trying to push their restrictive content laws in third world countries, where judges and legislators were cheapest, then have worked through AUNZ and EU, buying off politicians and getting new laws passed. They're trying to say that the ACTA is no big deal, it's just going to bring us into line with everyone else. Where's the outrage from all the people who are like "America is special and can never be subservient to international law"?

Sorry for the double post:
Monster Cable Claims eBay, Craigslist, Costco & Sears Are 'Rogue Sites' Under PROTECT IP Quote:these companies are defining any site they can't control as being a "rogue site." This isn't about stopping "piracy." It's about using the law to stomp out channels that they can't control. This is a key point that becomes obvious if you spend any time looking at the details of this law. It's not about protecting "IP." It's about protecting old business models that were based on absolute control of the channel. |
