After all day on a film shoot, best way to unwind? Go see a movie! Saw We Bought a Zoo last night, and it was an amazing movie. The writing was brilliant, cinematography had me on the edge of my seat, and you can't help but love the characters (you can never go wrong with a drunk Scotsman with a vengeance). Highly recommend seeing it.
There's a TV show that's actually reasonably entertaining about a privately owned zoo in the UP in Michigan. It's entertaining despite the fact that the wife is like 20 years younger than the husband (and is obviously the second wife when his kids show up in a couple episodes). They actually give a shit, so hard it hurts sometimes.

I won't be able to watch it unless I can stream it online. I'm in Canada.

But you are posting from Arizona?

Sorry Karth, pretty sure you are.

Azure's posting from Canadia (at the moment).

as a literature requirement I'm taking a class about "the wild west".

It includes a lot of movies and we started by watching the searchers, an old john wayne movie (I'm guessing that gives merc a boner). Its comedic elements held up quite well for 5-6 decades. The racism was pretty absurd but that was the point of watching it.

The Searcher's was pretty good, but Stagecoach and Rio Bravo far surpass it.

There is a Korean movie called Castaway on the Moon which is pretty good. Also I still stand buy The Good, The Bad and The Weird as being a fantastic homage to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I'd been meaning to watch The Good The Bad and The Weird ever since I saw the trailer a few years ago. Just got done watching it. Spectacularly well done.

Question: Merc what didn't you like about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books because I thought they were great and that all 3 Swedish movies and the US movie even more so were great as well.

Was it how it jumped around back and forth between Kallel and Lisbeth?

I'm going to jump in here and say I've got a pretty big problem with the graphic depiction of serial sexual abuse/rape, even though it was put there to 1) make the reader/viewer uncomfortable and 2) the way she 'gets back' at the offending character. They're very well done, but not my cup of tea, personally. Made watching the whole rest of the film super awkward and not at all enjoyable.

Yeah I can understand that, especially since my dad said it was uncomfortable watching it with my sister sitting next to him and me next to her, but what takes the cake for that is that some of our friends were invited and one of them is, for lack of better word, a dumb fuck and he allowed his 13 year old daughter to come too, even after I warned them that there were 2 violent rape scenes in it. It was bad enough for my dad to tell him the next day that he really shouldn't have brought her to it.

Well, to answer: Yes, the rape was a problem for me. It's one of the shittest ways to develop a character, or give her a crisis, in my eye.

And if we're talking about the books: I hated them because of how horrifically dry they were. I might as well have been reading a textbook about a crime, and this is coming from a guy who despises artsy, overbearing writing, and prefers that novelists just say it like it is.

Am I the only one who thought that was good development? (as well as leading to the greatest revenge scene since There Will Be Blood) But I guess I'm biased. I'm a sucker for empowering the director and writer's creative vision and not having anyone infringe on it. I'm actually surprised that scene made the final cut.

Thanks for the review btw. Was thinking about getting the books but I think I'll just stick with the movies then.

It baffles me when people don't understand the distinction between disliking something, and thinking it was a bad idea in the first place.

The character couldn't really have been developed rapidly in another fashion. Its an understandable (if underhanded) way of creating a gritty dark character that you sympathize with without mysterious hand waving. I get that. The film was very well done (the swedish one that I watched). I'm just never going to watch any of them ever again, nor am I going to read the books, because I was disgusted with it. But that doesn't make it a bad film/story/whatever.

Not to keep dragging it through the mud or anything, because it was a decent movie, but I'm just saying a writer/director could evoke just as much sympathy and establish a character just as quickly without rape. Look at the Goddamn Batman, for example. "My parents were killed by a street thug, so now I beat the shit out of bad guys with my bat paraphernalia." He didn't need rape to be quickly established as a sympathetic hardass.
