Depends on who you are asking, and what definition is being used in the context of the conversation.  I personally think that music can be an art form, and when constructed correctly, can be aesthetically pleasing to the ears.  For example, I think a lot of songs by Rush can be classified by art, while music by LMFAO really is not.  Its the message the piece conveys to the viewer is what makes something "art".

[/quote]Well, the context is that I spent around 10 hours working on it.

. . . a group of painters have come to the common conclusion that the most banal and even vulgar trappings of modern civilization can, when transposed to canvas, become Art.
[from 1962.]

An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have.
- Andy Warhol

You're free to judge LMFAO as terrible and worthless music. But I don't think you can kick them out of the Art club.

why.

also see rummy's post, art is a term that really has no definition and quite often people just throw it around to shut down things they don't like

If you see rocks at a quarry, they aren't art.

If you get a bunch of rocks and arrange them in a gallery, they will be considered art.

Take the same rocks and dump them in a quarry, are they still art?

Maybe.

Anything can be made into art (even if it is bad art), but anything isn't art. I don't think anyone needs high fructose corn syrup, yet I doubt anyone considers it art or its creators artists.

there's the contradiction in the first 4 lines that you posted anyway (rock pile isn't art [what if a photo is taken? they're in a quarry but the rocks aren't art, is the photo not art? or is the photo art but the subject matter not art, which makes little sense as here we have a thing that is considered art but isn't art at the same time], but put it in a place then it is art, then it is maybe art if you move it but maybe not) that essentially proves my point. the fact of the matter is anything can be considered art, you just need to find the right person. art is a word that essentially means "anything, so long as you find someone to consider that thing art"

I said "see rocks at a quarry" and not "see a photo/painting of or music/poetry/video about rocks at a quarry." Writing your own words in between my lines does not make my lines contradictory.

I disagree with your point (as I see it). I think something can only be art if there is someone to turn that thing into art. It's the artist who creates art, whether through a physical manipulation or a conceptual one. Just going and seeing something and thinking "hey I think this is art" does not transform something into art. Conversely, saying "this isn't art" about something that was intended to be an art piece does not undo the transformation of something into art.

tl;dr

Art needs creation. Audience: optional, but preferred.

that was a digression that i talked about, hence why it was found in brackets (generally digressions [this is a digression] work like that). without the other layer is... (rock pile isn't art, but put it in a place then it is art, then it is maybe art if you move it but maybe not) and then we get to the meat; last post already fleshed out more about what you said anyways

"I think something can only be art if there is someone to turn that thing into art... Just going and seeing something and thinking "hey I think this is art" does not transform something into art."
why is someone saying something is art not turning that thing into art. this links to the picture digression i talked about; all of a sudden just because you used a camera, it becomes art? or at least the paper does? and the scene itself is not art? and you have an artwork whose subject cannot be considered art? is it even an artwork then?
art is not an exclusive club, it's pretty all-inclusive.

i'd argue pretty hard that those rocks were created somehow. i mean they exist right.

tl;dr defining what is/isn't art is an exercise in futility because art is an incredibly nebulous term that, if finagled properly, can be used to apply to anything

This thread is now about whether rocks can be art.

[Image: turkey-cappadocia-goreme-cameltoe-rock-formation.jpg]

... now that is out of my system....

The Grand Canyon is considered one of the seven wonders of the natural world. It's not been created by a person, yet, it has as much power to take one's breath away or move someone to emotion as anything by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, or that other turtle.

According to the infinite monkey theorem, a monkey banging keys randomly on a typewriter forever will reproduce the works of William Shakespeare. That The Bard's work is considered "art" is indisputable. Who is to say that the Grand Canyon is not a work of art produced by semi-random forces over millenia? Chaos theory would hold that, given as large and as old as the world is, there should be a few natural masterpieces around. This holds for lesser natural formations like Niagra Falls. I don't think anyone can argue that Niagra Falls or the Grand Canyon are not beautiful. And if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then is not art also?

Also, did anyone, as a child, find and decide to keep a particularly pretty leaf or flower or seashell or rock? What compels us to do that, if not for the fact that it moves us, stirs something in us we can't always put to words?
