I'm seriously considering making a Medic costume.  I've never built a prop, though.  Any suggestions on how to make the Medigun?  I'm sure I can just do either foam or wood for the Ubersaw (or whichever melee I decide on).

EDIT: Also, Heavy.  My wife will be female Heavy, so suggestions on how to build minigun?

Well I do have a Medi Gun made up, it's with a friend, so here's hoping he hasn't pitched it yet.  Also I do have plans for making a Quick-Fix if you'd want to use that.  I also do have an extra minigun for use as well.

As far as making them PVC Piping will pretty much be your main items to build off of.  If/When I get pictures up of both I can tell you what we used and how it worked.

Also, spanish inquisition would be fun.  The costume is stupid easy to do (i've done it before).  Cardinal pattern plus purple gloves and some wooden crosses painted gold and some gold cord.

Apparently, medic is the cosplay of choice. I'm in the process of gathering the required mats to make a medic cosplay. Was planning on doing kritz and possibly syringe gun. Not sure though.

I wanted to do Zulf for acen 2012 but didn't have enough time/cash to do it. I'd do the kid but I'd have to do all the armor pieces and weapon props which would be a bitch to lug across the country/get through TSA.

Damn, I didn't mean to impose or anything. I mean would you mind if we both are Zulf? Because my girlfriend may be coming as zia.

Get reference pics of your character. Multiple angles, official and fanart. Make a list of their clothing, their props. Start with the easy stuff, see what articles of clothing or props you can get from shopping online or in thrift stores. For fancier props, make plans for how you'll make it. Search cosplay forums to see how other people did it. Get familiar with Wonderflex, paints and varnish. Set aside at least $100, or $200+ if you need to tailor your own props.

Depends on what you would want from the outfit, for just that jacket as pictured on the dummy probably $125 - $150, suede and pleather (fake leather) are not the cheapest fabrics.

For reference, I threw together Zaius' soldier jacket in ~8 hours on my crappy back-up machine, it was something like $50ish in materials. And anything fabric Im much better at making in a reasonable time frame than props

Maybe you should shelve the gaming company for now and have your first startup focused on making costumes for cons. I'm not joking, you have the content background to know the customer, attention to detail to please the fanbois/grrls, eye for design to break down a complex cartoon into a set of patterns and materials, and bean-counting skills to make it profitable.

I actually did some rough maths for how much I would need to make/sell to make an equivalent salary and it unfortunately didn't work out, or at least I haven't found a way to yet.

Micro-experiment will be at the end of the month when I actually have seller space at Fanime. Id really love to do both actually, possibly that way I might make enough to have a comparable or better salary...
