If it actually gets to the point where you're having difficulty getting meals, take that El up to Evanston and hit up your boy Eightball.

Yeah, go for a shitty job if you have to until you can get a better one. Try not to let yourself get overwhelmed. Try itemizing the things you have to do in order to improve your situation then go through and do them one by one. Try to take some of the nervous energy and put it towards something productive (aka try not to be idle). Go around and talk to some of the managers/owners of local business and see if they have any openings. Sometimes showing initiative by talking to owners and managers directly can open avenues that otherwise might not be open. I don't about your university, but at my school they would collect job openings from local small businesses for the students to browse. If you've been admitted, see if your school might have that sort of program. If you need some help, feel free to ask and I'll see what I can do. I've been at the point where I wasn't able to afford food before, and I don't wish it on anyone.

I'm moving to Chicago in about a week. My parents are moving to Florida. I didn't want to go to Florida because it's kinda gay, so that's why I chose Chicago. That, and school at UIC. And everyone I know is here, so..

I already have the place to live figured out. Apartment with some friends. yadda.

I've been trying to figure out something for a job so I can afford to do this. My uncle works at a railroad in Hodgkins (same one my dad used to work at years ago). My uncle heard they'd have positions open so he had me drop an application. I was also told that I'd most likely get an interview and such when I dropped my application off. The railroad is a unionized thing, so that's cool. Good pay and insurance and such. I went there and filled out the application and waited for about an hour before being told that the guy I was referenced to for an interview and all that was busy with meetings and that I should leave and wait for a phone call. So I did. A couple weeks went by, nothing. I called the number of aforementioned guy and left a voicemail yesterday reminding him that I left and application and that my uncle told me about a potential job and that I was interested. So I'm still waiting to be hopefully contacted about this job, and in about a week I'll be in Chicago.

A friend of my dad's that also works pretty close to where I'll be in Chicago let my dad know that his place of work will be getting a few more openings at some point in the future and that he could help me out. The pay there would also be pretty good. Thing is, I don't know when that's gonna happen, and it sure isn't close enough to wait for.

I have no idea what I'm going to do for rent and food and anything, basically, if I don't have a job. I'm freaking out. I don't care if I have to pick up a shit part time job making minimum wage just so I can cover rent and food and gas until one of these better jobs pans out, but I'm at the point now where I'm scared because I have like $50 to my name and I need to live on that until I can find a job.

And that's pretty much that. I don't really know what to ask for, but I'll read whatever advice anyone has to give. Even if it's just for the sake of letting me know I'm not fucked.

Florida is actually pretty awesome (some of us live here). If you ever do end up in Florida I can help you find all the good parts. For instance Gainesville has an awesome Music scene, there are a ton of artsy communities spread around that are good times to visit, really cool historic places like St. Augustine (you can get drunk in what I believe is the oldest bar in the US), some really interesting beach communities, islands, and keys (Cedar Key being one of my favorites), then of course there is THE Keys where you can hang out at Hemingway's old haunts. There are lots of springs which are great to visit in the summer when it is hot as balls. And there is a lot of other stuff too.

Most people know Florida for old people, Miami, and redneck republicans. But there are a lot of other interesting things here. I personally keep finding new cool places all the time. Couple weekends ago I ended up visiting a really cool area where Edison lived for most of his later years.

Thanks guys. I don't think that my food situation will get that bad. Eightball I might take you up on that just for shits and giggles and a man date. I've been talking with my parents and they're helping me where they can. The major problem lies in finding a place to work at, and as soon as I can get that first offer for whatever shit pay/hours job, the rest will fall into place in due time.

And for Surf, I was being more snide than serious about Florida. It is in my greatest interest to try and stay in Chicago, though. Of course, at some point(s) in time I will be in Florida for visits. My parents are going through with some business plans in Fort Myers vicinity. On the golden road, if everything goes well, all of our financial troubles will be taken care of.

I wasn't taking offense, I just wanted to let you know that even if you do end up here you will still have a good time. Fort Meyers is a pretty good area though. Sanibel Island was the place I just visited that turned out to be really cool. It is also near Tampa and St. Pete. St. Pete is where the Dali museum is. Naples is also very close and is a really pretty area, but it's mostly full of rich people.

Met my girlfriend's dad yesterday. Turns out he's a bible thumper who doesn't know she's a lesbian. Nothing like being introduced as a "best friend" after almost a year of dating.

I really need to stop making myself think I'm Ramirez and I must do everything for everyone RIGHT THIS MINUTE. Totally stressing myself out.
