I question how efficiently they can conduct heat from their baseplate into the rotating assembly.
I then ask how costly manufacturing will and how tight tolerances will be required.
Then I come to an important question that tends to escape engineers; will it work sideways?

My knee jerk reaction was no.  But then I quit being lazy and actually thought about it.  Let's address the statics with a few assumptions: this brushless motor is hardy enough stand the torque the impeller assembly exerts on it while mounted sideways. If not, get a more rigid motor and mounts.

Once this thing is starts spinning, you have gravity to deal with in the rotation, which before was through the axis of rotation but now is not.  But for circular rotation in gravity, it's a zero sum game as far as the force vectors go: for each little bit of fan getting a force exerted in the opposite direction of movement, directly on the other side of the impeller there is a similar portion having a force exerted on it in the direction of movement, so those cancel out.  But as I stated before, gravity will cause a torque on the motor and while spinning this will cause some extra friction on the bearings of the motor, which, I restate the assumption that it's hardy enough to handle.

Now, the fluid dynamics causing the impeller to glide on a air cushion- fluid doesn't freaking care, it'll expand to it's container, there will be air to glide on no matter the orientation.  with a vertical orientation, this cushion provided a separation between the baseplate and the bottom of the impeller by supporting the impeller against the force of gravity.  That support is no longer needed against gravity, but that separation still works to reduce friction.

So yes, if the motor assembly is strong enough, I think this thing should work in any orientation.  I just wouldn't change it's orientation while it's spinning.
