So, I noticed this beauty in my feed today on facebook. As many of you know, I've been in the market for replacing my old camcorder. Problem is that the bid ends in 3 and a half hours. The usual people I talk to about these things are offline and I'm a bit desparate for advice here.

I have $5600 in savings and that's not even counting my college fund. Even if the bids went up $1000 I would still have about $2k left. Does anybody have an opinion on this camera?

Wow, that's a lot of money.

I've never been convinced that buying expensive gear helps one develop elite-level skills better than trying to work with what you have. That applies to WoW, TF2, guitar-playing, car-driving, and I suspect would also apply to filming (among other things).

Problem is, rummy, I have nothing. I've been looking for a camera for close to 2 years now and this camera is relatively a steal. It retails for $3500, yet this auction includes 2 P2 storage cards(16 GB and 32 GB, not included in retail) plus batteries. If I already had a camera I was happy with or at least was up to consumer standards, I wouldn't even be considering this.

It seems like a pretty good deal provided the price doesn't get much higher (it's at around $2000 at the time of this posting.) Depending on what gear you already have, I'd be willing to pay up to $3000 (the p2 cards alone would cost almost $1000.) I'm assuming you already have an editing computer, software, maybe some mics. I've seen some raw footage shot with them and while it's not as sharp as other cameras, it's still not band and for the price it's perfectly acceptable.

I didn't see anything about a case for it. That may or may not be extremely important.
