So I am back from Seattle.  And I found the Mann Co. stores true origins.  Didzo, this pic is for you.

I find the idea of friend zone stupid.

Sure some girls might put someone there on purpose. But in most cases, how the hell is a chick supposed to know that a dude has feelings for her and wants to pursue something, ESPECIALLY if he never says anything? And if he does and he is turned down because she doesn't feel the same way, she should somehow be belittled/made into a bitch for it?

Nope.

Relevent XKCD, that being said, friend zone is the best zone, if you have the balls to try to work your way out of it by being forward.

I suspect that many cases of friendzoning start because she (or he, as it can happen both ways) is currently in a relationship when he meets her. He might think of her as a potential match, but because he actually likes her and has respect for her, he doesn't try to "win her over" or break up her current relationship or make her choose. So, he stays in orbit on the chance that the two of them might happen to both be single at the same time.

I guess. How long are people willing to wait? And really, in some cases at least it ought to be pretty clear when certain folks aren't going to ever end it. Will that person theoretically wait forever? It just... seems so self-destructive for the person waiting. So self-inhibiting.

It's my experience you just have to grab your massive sack, then use your balls of steel as a wrecking ball to break down the friendzone barrier, walk across the rubble, grab female, dip, then kiss.

Well, I wouldn't advocate that anyone wait very long, but some people do. If you think that he/she is in a rocky relationship, then waiting a month to see if they actually break-up seems reasonable. If they last longer than that, my recommendation is: Pass, move on to other fish in the sea.

But the truth is some people wait a long time. I've a 15~ish year friend that I have not much in common with, other than I think she is hot, and I suspect she digs me. We've never both been single at the same time, which has lead to some awkward moments that can be summarized like, "hey, what are you up to I'm coming to town! oh, ok, good luck with her, talk to you next year." I consider that friend-zone (on both our parts), but neither of us is abstaining from other options waiting for the other person to free up.

"Friendzone" is another term I don't like. If you just consider someone a friend because you would like to get in their pants, then you probably need to check your definition of friendship. If you expect someone to magically read your mind and feelings, then you're deluding yourself. I think there are far worse things than being in the "friendzone." There are many types of relationships between people that occur under a wide variety of conditions. Shit can get quite complicated. Changing the terms of any relationship almost always requires being proactive and taking risks. Sometimes things work for the better, but sometimes there are barriers that can't be reasonably overcome.

All that being said, I can't really imagine entering in a relationship with someone who I don't already consider a friend, despite the greater emotional risk involved if things start to crumble.

tl;dr: People need to stop bitching about the "friendzone." Accept it, alter it, or leave it entirely.
