I am pretty sure I lost my ipod classic as I have not found it for a month now. It might be time to give up on the search and purchase a new mp3 player for the new school year and long bus rides.
I was quite happy with my ipod but the downside to it was the large size. I also only used about 25-30GB of the total 80GB available over several years. So I'm looking for recommendations on smaller mp3 players but can still hold at least 8GB of music (preferably at least 16GB). Anything less is simply too small for me and I don't want to go through the hassle of switching out music.
The newest nano model is intriguing but I am also aware that there are other brands out there that might be good as well. I'm a bit wary on researching the Zune as I have heard of Microsoft discontinuing the development of new music players.

Reminds me. I have an old iPod kicking around. Gen 2 or 3 nano. Works fine, just got an iPhone at the time and later a nexus.

You can have it for like $10 or something assuming it fits your needs. Someone might as well use it.

Sansa Clip Zip.

It's about the size of an iPod Nano, has physical buttons, radio and other nifty features I never use, can play almost any music file type, and has a micro SD slot for extra music storage. I have one with 20GB in it (4GB internal + 16GB micro SD) that I got on Black Friday from Newegg for under $50.

Totally worth it in my opinion.

And Didzo, that looks to be a very promising option. I love the expandable memory feature and it sounds like it has all or most of the features that come with the newest ipod nano, minus the touch screen.
To add music, I would basically drag and drop files when the mp3 player is connected to my computer? (no software similar to itunes right?)

Nope, no need for software like iTunes (though you could use it if you wanted. Drag and drop works just fine.

Just get the Sansa, less money for Apple is more money for people that make better products.

I've owned a couple Sansa's now, the reason I don't have my original is they don't survive being run over. I recall ages ago of there even being a better 3rd party OS that improves its already impressive battery life and functionality.

It's called Rockbox. I considered using it but didn't feel like dealing with researching the set-up since the default worked just fine for me.

I just upgraded my Sansa Clip Zip SD card from a 16GB one to a 32GB one and took the opportunity to also install Rockbox on it since their stable release for the device was launched this month.

The automatic installer that's used to do it is really nifty and all you really need to do is to first make sure the device is in USB storage mode when plugged into the computer. The amount of customization options, settings to dick around with, and random plugins that Rockbox has are huge, but the real upside to it is that it doesn't do any weird folder renaming like the stock firmware does. It does not require any downtime after it's unplugged and generally seems faster. The stock firmware isn't removed either so you can boot into it if you really feel the need.

Yep. There's a newer version out with a larger screen that you should avoid though. Stick with the Sansa Clip Zip and use Rockbox if you want to tinker with it. It has an FM receiver.

I don't store any music on my phone or any other device. Google Music All Access dank near every song that exists at my fingertips is I have any data connection streaming.

Google music is the best. I cache any music I want when I'm in shitty service zones and then the rest just streams to my computer, phone, or tablet. Thanks to my bluetooth speakers I can be a tablet DJ at home.
