Upgrading 4850 --> 7850

Oh man, this upgrade is a long time coming. Trying to max GW2 at 1920x1080 made it finally sink in my baby rig isn't as leet as she used to be. In light of this fact I'm upgrading to a 7850!

Most of the parts from that rig are still current. I'm up to 8GB RAM, with a 1TB external, but otherwise, all the hardware is the same. I've unlocked the 4th core on the cpu so it's a Phenom II B25 now.

While I'm at it, any suggestions you might have? I'm not hurting for a CPU upgrade yet, but there will come a time. Obviously, I'm going to need a new mobo then, and that's going to be pretty pricey since once I get a decent mobo I'm going to want to grab a 128GB SSD to game on, as well, with the insane $.50/GB sales going on lately. Anyone here have personal experience with OC'ing a 7850?

$20 more for an Asus 7850, but youl'd probably be bottlenecking it with that system anyways.  Would be a lot better if you plan to upgrade the rest eventually though, the 78/79 series are good overclockers and dropping in price all the time too.

I actually already made the switch to a 7850, and I'll be ordering soon - you recommend the ASUS over the other brands? Why? Looking at the ASUS one on Newegg it looks fucking massive, although if I can fit the 4850 in my case I can probably fit the 7850 too (I was thinking of getting the HIS one.) I am, however, open to suggestions if you've had better experience with a particular manufacturer before. Keep in mind I pretty much have a $205 limit on this thing so none of the stupid $30 pricier ones.

Also, I will be upgrading my mobo and CPU probably around Christmastime or if I can snag something during Black Friday. Most likely an i5 2500K or similarly priced in the $200 range, and this mobo looks very promising for the price.

That would be the same mobo and CPU I have in my computer.  It's pretty nice other than the fact that mobo is thinner than a normal one and doesn't fit the backing brackets of a case on the right side.  You should probably get a 3570k by now though, I only didn't because Ivy Bridge had just launched when I was buying components and they jacked the price on them up.

And I only mentioned the Asus because it was the cheapest non-reference card, I actually have no love for them after I tried using the warranty on an 8800GT once and they shipped me back the card without fixing shit twice in a row.  The HIS card is probably a lot better, I was going to get a 7950 IceQ, but they upped the price on it a bunch after the Sleeping Dogs promo started getting packed with the higher end AMD cards.

Buy a 3570k and a Gigabyte ga-z77x-ud3h or a ud5h and a aftermarket cooler like a cooler master hyper 212 evo.

That combo will over clock to 4.2ghz with temps below 70 degrees and take anything that you can throw at it.

It's the best value right now by a long shot.

Seems like the Z77x gets a lot of bad units/RMAs

Also, while the overclocking capability is nice, I won't be overclocking at all until I actually start to see games dip under 60fps a majority of the time.

But putting it at like, 4ghz at least is just so freeeeeee.  And you will actually need to do that for running Planetside 2 >.>

The 3570K and 3770K auto-overlock from factory from 3.4 to 3.8. That's 'turbo mode'.
All you do is set that turbo upper limit multiplier to 42 or 43.

so I have it at 1100 stable. I tried 1200 and it caused a display adapter crash pretty quickly, so I'm going to try bumping it up to 1150 and see what happens.



I would say in this range I'm approaching a 7870, which is pretty good considering it's under 50c at peak load and 30% fan speed
