I'm on themisto as Goffin.  I would love to squad up with you folks and go find buzz cut's cult of followers.  Xenetic and I usually make it an everday event to find them and get it to a point where they log in as NC to send us hate tells but we haven't pinched a nerve that's deep within their core just yet.  We'll make a dent soon enough. and somebody take up a collection for Caff to build a new PC ffs..  all that hat selling has had to create some in-come by now.  :-* |

For cooling go with the corsair H series liquid pumps. Good bang for your buck and last I checked they're not really more than good quality air systems. This presumes they fixed the issues in the current release (there were some issues with cavitation - but overall a good product) I have the first gen H50 and it works well. The newer stuff apparently turns rigs into Antarctica.

Both the CPUs you listed are Sandybridge, old tech. My $230 i5-3570K walks over them both, before even overclocking.
Without going really overboard (I'm talking spending an extra $300-500 per component for 1-2% better performance): Either an i5-3570K or an i7-3770K. For the $100 price difference, you gain hyper-threading, 100mhz clock increase, and an 8mb cache instead of 6mb. Get nothing older then a z77 chipset motherboard. I moved from Asus to Gigabyte boards almost five years ago and have been very happy. I personally recommend either the GA-Z77X-UD3H or the GA-Z77X-UD5H. Both benchmark higher then their competitors. This really depends on what features you are looking for. If you let me know what features you want from a motherboard, I can offer up some other suggestions from Asus. It is very worthwhile going with a solidstate drive. I plan to run two in a raid 0 soon to see how well 1gb/s transfers work out Pretty much unless you want to pay the premium for the Intel 330 or 520 drives I would look at the OCZ Vertex 3 or 4 drives. At the current technology, you should expect a minimum of 500MB/s sustained read speeds. This requires SATA3. Ignore any drives which are SATA2 or advertise slower speeds. Your GTX280 won't cut it anymore. Look at either GTX670 or GTX680 based cards. ASUS 680s eVGA 680s ASUS 670s eVGA 670s I personally like eVGA over ASUS on video card designs. More options, factory overlock models, slightly better shroud and fan designs. Memory.... buy at least 16gb. It's about as cheap as it's going to get right now so you might as well nab a matched set. Get as many DIMMs as your board can take. Four 4gb sticks have less latency then two 8gb sticks. Get the fastest that your board can support with the lowest latency. Choices depend on what motherboard you go with, but stick with Corsair or G.Skill. Decent DDR3 2400 options: G.Skill or Corsair Your 1000W psu is overkill, but will be fine as long as it's not much older then four-five years and not made by a no-name Chinese brand. If you want to replace, 700+ watts will be fine, Corsair and Antec are very good. The stock cooler on Intel CPUs are fine if you don't plan to overclock. If you do overclock or for some other reason want a non-stock cooler, the best value right now is the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo. There are better options but they cost two-three times as much and only cool an additional 1-2 degrees at load. Avoid the water cooling kits like the Corsairs. They are louder then passive options, don't cool as well and cost a lot more. Only times they are worth while are when you are using cases with poor air flow and you can get away with a front-mount installation (like in a rack-mount case). Match with a good compound like Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX-4. Reapply every 18 months if you overclock. Don't know why you need a new case, they haven't changed. Find a nice Antec, be happy.. Airflow is important, front bottom in, top back out. Open style and skeleton cases are horrible for this. Your keyboard is garbage and needs to be replaced. Buy a Filco or a Ducky. NewEgg doesn't stock either cause they are pussies. That's about it off the top of my head. |

For each point...
- I dont overclock, but why not go for an LGA 2011, isnt that the higher model? And thus would offer better expansion possibilities - This would be more up my alley http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813128472 - there is a model that's virtually the same with 2011 and 1366, I'd rather not get an older slot model. I have absolutely no qualms about going overboard on the motherboard, I dropped $350 for the motherboard that is in my box now and I have not regretted it for a second, Atom had the same one, got it a few months after me. I do want the 6-8 DIMM slots, and a PCI slot would be nice so I can continue to use my soundcard. Asus Ive just had very good customer experiences with, never had bad hardware, and they've been great about warranties, though I know gigabyte is solid. I do not have the money to get both a good CPU/MB combo and a good GPU, hence why I would have to piecemeal it if I wanted it now. I simply can't afford to drop the $2,000 I would like to spend when I'm on the cusp of paying off my loans and moving out. Your videocard recommendations are what Id be looking at though. I just hate the case I have now, its got a door on it and has cut through my mic wire once...also not the best airflow. Â Sig by Joel |

I have the same cooler Hek mentioned and I am very happy with it. My AMD CPU (not overclocked) never gets over 40°C under load. I have a Coolermaster HAF 932 case and I have no qualms with it other than its overkill size. I believe that the HAF X is the latest full tower in that line with a couple of nice improvements over the already solid 932. But most cases will do the job just fine. Get what suits your aesthetic.
Planetside related: I have significantly improved my flying skills and no longer die in trees and cliffs often. Progress! It's also fun to lock a galaxy mid-flight over a point (with the no fall damage thing equipped) to drop the entire crew simultaneously. |

And thus would offer better expansion possibilities2011 replaced 1366, 1156 replaced 775. Same generation, different price points. There are currently over 50 CPU choices for 1156, but only 3 for 2011. The most powerful 2011 CPU is the Intel i7-3960X. It costs $1030. It outperforms the 3570K/3770K ($230/$330) by 1.13% in benchmarks and even under-performs by a similar margin in newer games like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2. Why? It's SandyBridge-E, 2nd generation. The 3770 and 3570 are IvyBridge, 3rd generation. They use less power, have a smaller die and perform better. There are currently no IvyBridge-E CPUs released yet and really no reason to buy into the 2011 market. You are actually limiting yourself by going that route. You can get 6, 8 or even 12 on the 2011 boards, but to what end? Most 2011 boards have a memory limit of 32gb, just like the 1155 boards. Some do go up to 64gb but rock the $400-$550 price tag (for non-shit brands). Future expansion isn't a good reason, as you should match the specs (and even the brands and models) for all the sticks. Higher end boards often don't have PCI slots, tho mid range generally do but why would you want to reuse an old soundcard? Most on-board PCI-E cards will out perform older cards, not to mention modern driver support. In all honesty, it is really hard to justify the price of a lot of these $250+ motherboards. If you can buy a dual PCI-E 16x boards with 4 SATA3 ports and 7+ USB3 ports for $150, why spend $350? Pretty much every board with an Intel storage controller (ie, almost all of them) support CPU-accelerated raid. You might get an extra onbaord nic or a few extra fan headers, but it isn't worth the extra investment. Invest in the right areas for maximum return. I'd also suggest, caff, that when you're buying a CPU, they tend to be pretty good for a while. And the rate at which socket generations have been coming along, there will be something after 2011 by the time you're ready to upgrade your CPU again.

Looks like a lot of people are having my problems, because they have been addressed swept under the rug.
Instead of stuck at "Loading Textures 100%" I am stuck at "Loading Textures 94%". Instead of a dead splash screen it now has fake text scrolling and some circles drawing and erasing. Looks like animated gifs. It still just sits there like that forever until I get back to the computer and close it with task manager. Personal best so far is 2 hours. |
