How do you know you don't just look very similar to the local mob boss?

To those of an expository inclination:

How can I (or anyone) get better at writing? Be it of a technical or creative nature, do you guys know of resources one could use to improve the quality of his or her writing? I understand that "write more" is a decent place to start, but I'm wondering if there's a more focused means of self-improvement here.

Vague question, sorry. Still, any thoughts?

I'm not a writer myself, but some good advice that I've heard from people who are writers is (other than to read and write a lot) to find people who are knowledgeable in writing and can offer you critical and relevant analysis and opinions regarding your work.

What didzo said, also you could tell the person to try emulating the style of writing of someone they look up to as a way of improving.

Is probably a good place to start.  It's half memoir half techniques for being a better writer.  I heard somewhere that if you are really serious about improving your writing aim for writing 2000 words everyday.

Write things you are comfortable with writing then try to write things you aren't comfortable with writing.  Maybe do some searches for writers workshops in the area or respected writing communities online (I've been participating in some flash fiction contests on the Something Awful forums).  Maybe look into the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) because I know that in order to make a novel length work in a month, you have to write about 1800 words a day.

There's a lot of quotes out there about writing and mostly what it boils down to is to write a lot, recognize that some of it won't be great, hang onto the stuff that is, and then to keep writing anyway.  Eventually you will be as good as you want to be.

They all have slightly different mechanics

1 - 5 Are mostly the same with one exception, they are also all PC-98 (TurboGraphix-ish hardware, same manufacturer) and you need an emulator to play them

Scarlet Devil (TH6) - Pretty standard, no gimmicks, points are extra lives, continues let you play through

Cherry Blossom (TH7) - Collecting enough cherry points gives you a shield, blue card drops are extra lives, continues let you play through

Imperishable Night (TH8) - Focus lets you switch characters, 8 total playable, blue cards are extra lives, continuing advances the clock

Flower View (TH9) - Side-by side and multiplayer, higher scrores drop shit on the other player/computer in the split screen

Mountain of Faith (TH10) - Better drop collecting, points are extra lives, infinite continues, but you have to replay the stage you died on

Subterranean Animism  (TH11) - Lives/Bombs are drop pieces from mid and stage bosses, collect 5 for an extra, RIP homing amulet Reimu

UFO (TH12) - Lives/Bombs spawn from colored UFOs, get three UFO tokens to spawn one, the more you kill on screen the more pieces the UFO drops (Fuck this mechanic so much)

Ten Desires (TH13) - Collect souls to fill a meter, when full you can go into a trance mode (invulnerable/higher damage)

My favorites are 7 and 8
