It was a solid movie but nothing all that memorable or special. I did like the fact that most of the movie was Morgan Freeman's voice. Makes for a soothing experience even in what should be unsettling scenes. Or maybe I'm just weird.

Saw Memento.

Long story short, don't give me movies that follow a set of rules established within the first few minutes of the movie. They will get figured out very quickly and I will be bored.

Memento came out 13 years ago. At the time, it was a pretty good depiction of an unusual story convention. Since then, that convention has been copied, riffed on, echoed, etc. a number of times. Exposure to works influenced by Memento can weaken the impact of the original.

Halloween (the movie)1978. was fucking scary at the time. Totally not the same if you watch it for the first time today after watching any handful of latter horror movies. Or movie spoofs. Or SNL spoofs.

Night of the Living Dead 1968. was fucking unique at the time. A Monster Movie with no identified lead Monster?? (no Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf-Man, Lagoon Creature, Mummy, etc...). Now how many fucking zombie movies/books/games/jokes are there? We had to invent Fast Zombies because we got bored with Slow Dumb Zombies.

The Blob came out in 19fucking58. Watching it for the first time now, I presume, it would seem pretty tame.

War of the Worlds, on 19motherfucking38. On motherfucking radio. All you have to do is watch Buckaroo Bonzai (greatest film ever), and War of the Worlds is totally ruined.

To be fair, I have very, very little movie watching experience beyond what I have brought up in this thread. I've never seen the convention used in Memento used or replicated in anything else I have seen, with the exception of Timecrimes (not that Timecrimes thrilled me either). The premise of Memento, established reaaally early on, is mostly what bugged me as it defined how the movie would have to play out. The convention just made the movie feel longer.

I guess I can't say that I've never seen the convention used before since I don't know which part of the convention was novel and replicated.

I have seen Pulp Fiction, but I never drew the connection between the way Pulp Fiction and Memento were done.

To use a metaphor, Pulp Fiction felt like a series of related paintings being revealed one at a time as the movie progressed. Memento felt like a single painting that you already recognized being slowly revealed one section at a time. Whether the sections are revealed from left to right or right to left or at a random fashion or with artful gestures or simple motions can not change the fact that I could already predict what the painting was based on the reveal of the very first section.

I just watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time which is by the same director, which is just as great as Summer Wars. Maybe even a little better.

Watched The Virgin Suicides. Odd movie with a strange vibe to it. I think I get what the point of the movie was, but it didn't really resonate with me.

Saw Looper. Good thing that Bruce Wilis yelled at me not to worry about how the whole time travel thing works since it let me have a fun ride with the movie.

Hotel Transylvania was more entertaining than I expected.  You groan at the voices they get which sorta just feel like its part way to another bad Adam Sandler comedy with the likes of David Spade and Kevin James, but it's not nearly as bad as his usual stuff since its not under his company.  The animation was really good I thought, way cartoony and real frenetic and all over, its very visually appealing.  Looking back at what else Sony Animations has done, which is alot of crap, this is probably the only real likable movie they've done...Even though they just had to plop in out of place pop music scenes where everyone just sorta knows what is going on lol That stuff is annoying.
