I still can't get my head around that one, k0ala is one of the least hateful people I've ever met.
In this case, we have one forum member suggesting that the actions of another forum member is biased based on activity on the forum that is available for all of us to witness and form our own independent judgments. In the other case, we have one forum member reflecting upon his day while other forum members, who were not there and did not witness the alleged racialist behavior, were voicing opinions based on what they thought might have happened. Completely different set of facts and circumstances.
I phrased that poorly which led to your misunderstanding- I didn't mean Koala's incident itself, I meant the ensuing discussion of racism it prompted, and the calls for less ?blatant? language, but I forgot that it was Kor himself making those calls: (11-29-2012, 01:48 PM)Kor link Wrote: While I encourage meaningful dialog on any variety of topics, I'd ask that, on this particular issue, people remain eloquent and dignified. now: (01-30-2013, 09:47 AM)Kor link Wrote: Why lie to yourself? A spade is spade, don't bother trying to dress it up any other way. Yes, I believe that most derogatory terms detract from meaningful discussion; I also believe that in cases like this, where the person(s) involved defines the term rather than the opposite, it falls directly under the 'spade' statute. More eloquent people have stated better in the past: Only by telling people to not use slurs does it grant them power. "Hood Rat" is a term that is immediately understood. So is "screaming, fat black woman" , " Irish/Italian mutt." and "wop" (Ok, I'll admit, when one of my soldiers used "I'm a wop" in explaining how to pronounce his name, I had to ask wtf a wop was..) Should Hood Rat be acceptable use here because there was a video posted? Should we take offense at Koala's self-labeling, because we don't have proof of his ethnic background? Should my use of "fat black woman" be somehow less allowable, because I didn't have a camera to record the proceedings when I had an experience similar to the one Koala had posted about? No? Great. My point is: I'm glad we're down to calling things what they are >.<b
I rarely have to clarify or correct anyone when their quoting me. Normally, I'm relatively succinct, and have to apologize about the confusion. Crow, the first quote you used wasn't a declaration of my position in that initial discussion. Rather, it was simply an appeal to everyone's better nature. Everyone involved here knows that discussions about race and racism can often be a passionate affair, and I was pleased that you, in fact, did remain eloquent and dignified. I never considered your phrase usage as offensive or disruptive to the conversation. Rather than censor, I sought to moderate to ensure that civility. I'd like to iterate, that anyone that has spent a reasonable amount of time with me, or has read my post history, knows that I am the straight talk guy. What I posted here about that particular usage is what I'm speaking to. I make it a point to never use broad strokes when speaking to complex issues, I've always felt that if there was ever a desire of deeper conversation on the matter, I would have more to contribute than sweeping generalizations. To further the point on the use of language, critical thinking is still required on forums: Taking whats said at face value, or reading between the lines. Both are happening here, so both are considered. Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. -Albert Einstein |

Rummy:
### Yes Kor: Thanks for clarifying. I'll be sure to remember that the next time you interject in that manner that you're not actually declaring a position. However, I'll also try to remember that you're the straight talk guy and when you call something a spade, it's a spade and that's your position. But only in that particular case and not in the broader strokes. And critical thinking is great, I'm glad you're a fan. Only a few cases can be established where critical thinking is not required for communication (although some could argue that if much critical thinking and reading between the lines is required for your communication, you're not really the straight talk guy), so you've fashioned the conversational equivalent to putting cherries in the fruit salad- no one can really disagree with it, but it doesn't really accomplish much either. The hell of it is, I'm arguing with you and (now) we agree... let's call things what they are and not gussy it up. I'm just giving you a little hell for what, minus your clarification, would appear to be a reversal of positions on a topic I get a bit fired up about. "It's not about Racism" -No, I get fired up over people coming under fire for talking plainly and bluntly.    Ok, the lulz- I work with a guy who's a car snob. He prays in the church of AWD and turbocharged small displacement 4 cylinders. If you ask him, my mustang is "primitive." He has a WRX. And I love WRXs, I should probably own one, I'm not hating on WRXs, they're capable as shit, and he brags about how he can do anything he wants in his WRX. But this dude has called in twice in a row because of snowy road conditions and I made the hour+ drive in the same conditions in my Mustang both days. We laughed our asses off today at work at his expense. |
