If you do read the whole article, Gearbox bough the IP, but are letting the next highest bidder (a small company founded by members of the original Relic team), do the development. Gearbox will either be publisher or just financial backing/investment.
This means, a portion of the guys who worked on Homeworld... are working on this. So... it should be good. Note: It's not gearbox's fault that DNF wasn't very good, it was numerous years in development and redesign and Gearbox just said; "Fuck it lets get it out there as quick as possible". |

Dominions 3 is on Steam and on sale! Buy it! It's awesome if you're into turn based strategy.

I don't know how well we can consider that as "PC Gaming News" anymore. As it looks like their design goals are an HTPC (Gaming) Operating System meant for living room usage (IE, another console except... more open), we all knew it was coming though.
Anyway, looks promising... Guess that's what my steambox would run once I build it (unless they hvae something they're releasing to compete with next gens. |

The cool thing about this that speaks to my inner computer geek is that you can essentially build your own console, load it up with the free Linux-based SteamOS, and have access to your entire steam library. One of the coolest parts is that if you already have a decent gaming PC, you can stream your games from your beefy gaming rig over your home network to your budget SteamOS box. Of course, we'll need to see how it performs in practice, but in theory it sounds pretty nifty. Maybe it will even help give more incentive for game development on Linux, so hopefully more than just Valve will support native Linux games. Supposedly the PS4 OS is based on x84 FreeBSD, so maybe that will give OpenGL some more clout as well.
There have also been rumors about Steam implementing game "borrowing" for games in your library that you are not currently playing and "family sharing" where multiple accounts can access the same games on the same box. So for instance if you have Fallout NV on your Steam account but your SO doesn't, then theoretically they can play Fallout on their account if it's on the same computer, or if you have "borrowing" set up. Of course it will probably be publisher dependent if they will support game "borrowing" on Steam or not. If SteamOS also contains a lot of the features of the more popular Linux distros, then it should be able to scale fairly easily to a full fledged OS as well. |

Oh, Steam Borrowing is not a rumor, it is confirmed
http://store.steampowered.com/sharing/ Also, OnLive apparently works surprisingly well and that's internet streaming gaming (http://www.onlive.com/), I know a few people who have and use it. Also, I expect SteamOS to basically be a similar-to-Chrome-OS idea, where they strip everything except the necessities of their OS running (which makes sense for what they're doing). The Game Streaming thing is definitely a big deal, because that's was always a drawback, keeping me from most *nix OS's, I want to be able to play my windows games on it and not have to worry about compatibility or having to trick linux into thinking it's a windows machine via WINE and a faux DirectX or whatever (it was always a bitch). Though, honestly, I might let SteamOS install it's own editions of games like L4D2 and other source engine games, here's why: http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/faster-zombies/ The OpenGL libraries are actually better and faster than DirectX
