This house is getting sold.
My grandmother owns a two family house. My parents lived upstairs until I was 6 years old. About 20 years later, my wife (at the time, girlfriend) and I moved in. It was kinda cool to go back to a childhood memory. That was six or seven years ago. All of a sudden, grandma decides to get a small condo to cut down on costs. Smart move, really. My grandfather died a year ago and it was hard until then because Parkinson's disease is a scary thing. So now that it's just her, she doesn't want to care for an old house with tons of maintenance costs. Like I said, still not a bad decision. Kat and I were thinking about getting a place of our own, soon, anyway. Her father left her an IRA with pots of money in it. We could pay for half a house with it and get a modest mortgage. The FML is that the house went on the market on Friday. The first showing is tomorrow. I'm having the heaviest feeling of dread and panic that I've ever had because now I might be out on my ass with nowhere to go. Modular Homes (which are not "lego homes", Commish, Negate, Luca) take 8 - 14 weeks to build and Kat's mother still has to give us the land to build on. She's giving us a place to put it! Freaking sweet! But the waiting is killing me. I wasn't consulted. I wasn't asked. No one said "Hey, Jeff, what do you think?" I really thought family was supposed to take care of you, not just dump you like an inconvenience. I mean, yeah, I'll be fine. A lot of people have survived much worse. That's not the point. I've been discarded. I'm so angry that I could light my hair on fire with my rage. I've met complete strangers and worked for businesses that have shown me more regard. All I have to do now is depend on something out of my control. I have to hope that the house doesn't get sold this year. Mother fucker. |
Looked online real quick. I almost choked. There isn't apparently an apartment around here for what I'm paying now. I would have to pay more for less than half of what I have now. It's cheaper to own a house around here than it is to rent. Further research is necessary. Maybe I'll find something that won't make my eyes bug out of my head. |
so, you're paying something to stay in this 1/2 of the house that your grandma is selling out from under you, right? so, you're paying rent? Therefore you are a Tenant? Given the familial relation between landlord and tenant, I'm guessing you don't have a lease. That's OK, because you're still a tenant, and (varying from state to state) there are certain protections and procedures* you can count on before a landlord, including your grandma, can evict you. Some of them, like Kentucky, can take a damn long time, others, like Ohio, do not. Go, find information. *I'm assuming you've already asked her to "whoa hoss, let me get my living situation straight before you sell this place." |

What Crow said. She voided familial ties when she decided not to give you an advance notice on the sale of the property. Family sticks together, but when family screws you over..leave them in the dust.

I made it clear to my family I would need time, but I never actually said "Please postpone your plans". At any rate, they think just grabbing an apartment is easy for me. As it so happens, there are places around here. My wife's google-fu is stronger than my own, I suppose.
I will do a little searching, though. Sounds like I should get something to wave in their faces. I say "they" because I'm sure her children are helping her out with all of this. My uncle probably didn't even think about my situation (not maliciously, just unfortunate) and my mother probably doesn't care (malicious and stupid). |

The house is sold. The people who are buying it don't mind renting to us. It'll be rent +50%, but it's do-able. I'm no longer seething mad at my family and apologized to my mother. We're all having cake on Wednesday for my birthday.
I've put in requests for info from contractors to get an idea of how much money we're going to be spending so I can get my heart attack done and over with. Still, FML, we have to move ALL OF THIS SHIT eventually. I can't believe how much crap we've accumulated. We're going to move portions of it into my mother-in-law's basement because it'll be next door when we get the house built and her basement is basically empty. We just need to make sure it's in plastic totes because water. Does anyone know of a simple dessicant to throw in these things? I could just buy out a Target of asprin and get all the little packets, but I know there's got to be an easier way. |

The vast majority of my friends from college and the army are charismatic and incredibly successful in life. I don't really communicate with any of them anymore. I should quit checking facebook.Â
