I dunno what mood you want but if you could move the lights around I think maybe one good setup would be your main light almost head on to you but maybe slightly to the right, then a fill to get in your left side (probably just a reflector), and maybe if you want to get fancy something behind you to get that rim effect (this might actually be counter to your idea since behind you is very dark but you still might want to get something there to separate you from the background). I'm by no means an expert so that might look like shit, but the idea would be to pick up the right side of your face and maybe get some soft shadows from your features to make it more depth. This would be sort of what I'm talking about but without fill - http://davidcohendelara.tumblr.com/image/58903825821 And this would be similar to what I'm talking about with more of a rim and less light on the face - http://davidcohendelara.tumblr.com/image/57508861992 |

Yes, I drew my hair like that, and darkened it using pixel brushes, and not using filters or shadows/highlights. I over-exposed the photo in photoshop to provide heavier contrast to the background image. My eyes looking left lead you a little away as to create a bit of a distraction to the subject. The original shot is definitely not as overblown, but the speedflash used is supposed to create that effect on just my face. Here's what it looks like in original lighting, but a different angle, before I did any digital brushing and editing. Â I had flattened it with the flash to remove the depth between me and the background shadow-figure. Sadly I had forgotten the white balance it seems...and wow apparently I saved over my original. GREAT. here's a photo I did with natural lighting and didn't touch in photoshop! Purists, rejoice! Too hip for gangsters and too gangster for hipsters. |

I don't know, most narcissistic project ever. It's been a rough couple years since I left school so I figured it would be the best physical representation of that in a photo? Too hip for gangsters and too gangster for hipsters. |

Pretentious artsy explanations can be an integral part of your work, but the pretentious artsy explanation had better be good and have some material evidence to support it. As far as the execution went, I'm not a fan. Not going to critique it too much, but I suggest that you make every part of the artwork you present serve some purpose, either conceptual or aesthetic. No random floating triangles or parking lot numbers or black backgrounds eating part of your hair or awkward shot composition. Unless if they are part of your vision. |

I'm kinda too shy to share it :v The triangle is a bit of satire regarding hip hop culture and its obsession with illuminati symbols. Too hip for gangsters and too gangster for hipsters. |

[/quote] Your work is good, any criticisms I'm throwing out are not meant to put it down but just to try to give you some ideas to improve. Knowing the explanation helps connect a lot of the elements and it makes me like it more. But in a visual medium you need to give people more clues to interpret what is going on. Even surrealist painters usually use some method of engaging people in interpreting the piece, even if they get it wrong. I did some shadow pics myself to test out a theme. I'm not saying they are great or better than yours, I myself see a lot of room for improvement. But since we tackle the theme from different directions it might be helpful for you to see how I did mine and think about what works and what doesn't. Anyways here is the pic: http://500px.com/photo/29256913 |

When I get home, I'm going to make a display on the wall for these. I'm not a huge harry potter fan, but I'm a big fan of trying to make nerdy shit seem slightly classy in home decor. |
