Wi Fi Routers

I run two routers in my house (upstairs & downstairs, it's a townhouse) and lately both of them have been sucking pretty bad. It's gotten to the point where I've turned off wifi on my phone and just use 4g. So my two questions are - do I need to fiddle with the channels because I'm getting some interference and what is a really good router that could cover that range? I wouldn't mind changing over to just 1 good router, these routers are pretty old (the better one is actually one I managed to get for free because someone was upgrading their router).

That's a vague description of range, what is the radius (rough estimate) and what is the wall type that is being penetrated? (Brick, Mortar, wood, plywood, drywall, etc. etc.)

It's plywood/drywall as far as distance a rough estimate would be about 100 ft. I think that is overestimating it.

Install InSSIDer on your phone, follow the instructions and walk around your place.
It should show you the best channel to use.

The problem with 2.4ghz wifi is that the is tons of channel overlap and not many channels.

Radio choice comes down to power and antenna design.

I used this and literally every channel in the 2.4ghz spectrum was not recommended to use. I ended up buying a new router that uses the 5ghz spectrum because no one is on it. I was probably due for an upgrade anyways.

The new 5ghz gear is decent. Compatibility still being an issue with older equipment.

I made sure everything I have is n and it says n can use 2.4 and 5. So here is hoping.

I have been using ASUS RT-N66U aka the Dark Knight for almost a year or a little more and I love it.

Just recently started playing around with some of the advanced settings on it and it definitely caters to networking enthusiast. Its in the center of the house and easily covers 100ft radius circle at full bars. It also has adjustments for power outputs to your antennas so I have used that to boost the signal range even further, just have to watch heat output.

I use a Linksys e3000 as my AP but not as a router because I have to use the one Verizon provided me (because it's also my cable modem), and that's unlikely to change unless I shell out for gigabit service at my house (then they'll run a Cat6 cable in from the ONT).

You can have them provision the ONT for ethernet instead of coax if you want, you just have to keep their modem on your network.

[/quote]Two problems with that comment: When I asked the Tech to do that, he said he couldn't unless I was paying for a high enough tier service to warrant it (i.e. the coax connection isn't fast enough to deliver the connection); and if you DO have it provisioned for Ethernet, the only thing you lose by ditching the Actiontec is your guides and on-demand service on your cable box, unless you dig around online and find the custom routing settings you need to do to your router to make it work.
