[/quote]I think that would go to GTA V. It was good, but not that good. I was expecting a game completely centered around everything leading up to bank heists and there's only like 3 in the game and none of them are as good as the bank heist mission from GTA IV. |

Both Bioshock Infinite and GTAV present great, smart, and/or insightful commentary on art, music, science, technology, politics, the corruption of power, sex, and drugs.
Their value lies beyond their pedestrian gameplay, though in that department both were somewhat improved from their predecessors. Hell, Lee 'Scratch' Perry was the fucking DJ of the rasta channel. That's some deep cultural appreciation. And that moment when I realized I was listening to a barbershop quartet adaptation of a Beach Boys song was sneaky fucking storytelling. |

What rummy said. I thought they were great games, but even better stories. Late this last generation there was a visible leap in storytelling and the approach and general intelligence as to how the developers and writers want that story told. What we're seeing is a HUGE leap in games writing, but not a huge change in the way of gameplay. So we are seeing this large imbalance between storytelling and gameplay. It's best noticed with GTAV and B:I. They both rely on old trusted and true gameplay mechanics, but completely change the way their story is told and how deep the mechanics in which they say it. The only game to seemingly get a great ratio as far as storytelling and gameplay with this huge push in games writing is, in my opinion, The Last of Us.

The review suggests that "finally!" there is a "smart" game, as if no one has ever made a well-written or intellectually stimulating game in the past two and a half decades. I scoff at the notion! SCOFF SCOFF!

I'll agree to disagree on the story in Bioshock Infinite, but how can you possibly say that the gameplay in Infinite is an improvement in any way shape or form from the previous two bioshocks? It's an over-simplified downgrade in nearly every way! Right off the bat we're hit with the 2 weapon limit, something not present in any of the series predecessors, which completely breaks the whole concept of its gameplay. Weapons are supposed to be constantly switched out, but the game gives very little ammo which is quickly slurped up by bulletsponge enemies. The game has a solution to this being vigors (which don't make much sense in the realm of the story) and weapon upgrades. The only problem with this is that weapon upgrades completely go against what the game has set up previously. Enemies are switching out main weapons every chapter which means no ammo for the gun you've poured money into. "So buy some ammo then! That's what the shops are there for!" you say. Valid point, until you get to the point where you're running out of money for continually buying ammo and salts that the enemies keep absorbing. "So dump some money into another gun!" you might argue. I agree, I should! Only problem is that I don't have enough after dumping my money into the salts and ammo! And on top of this, you lose money every time you die. And to add on that, enemies regain health when you die, including boss enemies! Strategy flies out the window, just keep shooting it till it dies. And that's not even talking about that awful ghost fight which almost made me quit the game. The core gameplay is broken. The vigors are copy-pasted from the previous two games so I see no real reason to go into them, aside from them seeming to have been forced into the game halfway into development. |

I found the combat mechanics to be cleaner and crisper, the enemy pathing less stupid, and the terrain more varied. I'm not saying the gameplay was great, it is no dark souls, not even a dishonoured, but was an improvement over the original, which I found somewhat repetitive and tedious.
I had no issues with the ammo, but I tend to play slow and headshot everyone I can. |
