Hi all, I've decided after many years that it is time for me to build a new rig. I haven't built anything for over 6 years so I am unsure on a couple things in my build.
I want to build a rig primarily for gaming looking at a budget of $1500 to $2000, I have a few things already picked out pcpartpicker but none of them are set in stone. I want to get an SSD and I've heard good things about Samsung, I'd like to keep windows and my more important games on it for the better load times.

I also am looking into getting one of the new nvidia GSYNC enabled monitors but I don't know if the extra refresh is really worth the extra cost, if any of you have used a 120+hz monitor let me know how good they are.

I'm looking to pick up the parts and assemble this build during this month.

Final build

Any parts that you will be reusing or don't need to buy? (Case, OS, Software, Peripherals, etc)

You have any other requirements other then price and SSD? Running a certain game at certain settings or noise thresholds?

I just built a new machine for myself this last month, but curious to hear your answers to those questions before I throw anything out.

Missing the point of gsync.  When you have a gsync monitor you don't deal in refresh rates, and that's what makes it worth it.

Also if you're already buying something from Microcenter why not wait for a motherboard/cpu combo sale?  They happen all the time and are usually the cheapest way to get them.

The RAM is a little OP but if it's in budget then why not.

Looks pretty solid so far. Other then case/PSU/SSDs.

I was going to suggest looking at the Nocuta NH-D14, but it's quite a bit more expensive then the Frio.

It's what, like $30 more? Worth it.

I won't be reusing any cases or OS's sadly but I do have the peripherals done already I have a brand new duckey shine 3 with cherry switches that Hek recommended and I intend to keep my G500 for now. Now as for the other requirements I'd like to be able to run planet side 2 on at least high settings if not better with good stable frames at 1920x1080 and be able to run new games well for at least 2 years. I'd prefer noise wise that it isn't deafening but it doesn't have to be silent by any means.

How much better a cooler is it? I'll be doing some more research and such tomorrow.

with the 4670k and the 770 you should easily hit the mark for performance you want in ps2 and most future games, and that would be without even trying to OC your machine.

Otherwise case recommendations antec 300 series.
For the most part we BRBUers have been through this song and dance so many times now that you have at least a dozen threads to look over for other suggestions.

Otherwise best of luck on finding the parts and the build

I run a 4.4GHz overclock on a 3770k with one and it never hits above 42 or so unless I'm maxing it out. It's also super quiet.

I'm running a 4.5ghz oc on a 3570k and I hit 80c on prime95 (murder) and never paid attention when gaming. It is a very quiet albeit huge cooler. What's nice is that it comes with really good thermal paste and Noctua has done a ton of mobo and ram compatibility tests.

RAM: For memory take a look at this article about Haswell memory scaling. XMP is another key word you should learn about, this just briefly explains what XMP is.

As for RAM voltage I was torn between a 1.5v setup vs 1.65v I spent ages trying to find any credible sources with information either supporting either one and why. About the only thing I learned was that Intel's warranty only covers dimms that are 1.5v if warranty issues are due to ram. There is an additional warranty coverage that can be found from intel that will cover pretty much any issue, but up to you if that's worth it to you. I am betting 1.65v will be fine but since it wasn't covered I just didn't want to deal with it. Had corsair dimms for last build and gave gskill a try this time. So far so good, meet my needs that I was looking for.

CPU cooler: I can't say enough good things about the Noctua brand and their products. CPU cooler. For a budget cooler I know I installed a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo in my freinds machine. Any cpu cooler that can fit the 115X(1150,1155,1156) all fit the same socket.

Cases: Had a Antec 1200 for my last computer and enjoyed it. Tried something new for this one and got a NZXT Phantom 820. Man its silent has good temps and nice features. For mid towers I was looking at the Corsair C70 but ultimately didn't go with it as i wanted to focus more on a quiet machine. I would recommend both depending on what features you want. Do your parts a favor and just make sure to get a case with dust filters! If you want to splurge go for Noctua 120mm case fans too. But make sure you have enough headers or plan which fans you buy.

Motherboard: I have only had ASUS boards so I will likely be biased but picked up a Z87-Deluxe/Quad and I love it so far. The NFC box has been great when it works. Still sorting out an issue with it being recognized. Other then that it just comes down to how much bells and whistles you want.

If you need more USB 2.0 headers for case expansions, card readers, and also some things like power supplies and liquid coolers. Pick up this NZXT header extension

Drives: I duno if I would advocate using the VelociRaptor TB drives. Not because they are bad, but because of cost/storage value. Especially since SSDs have gotten cheaper. I would still recommend getting the fastest/biggest drive for your OS and primary games you play and then a normal hdd for storage and games you don't play to often or don't want the benefit of the SSD. This does require some work on your part for management of storage space and being aware of were you actually install stuff.

SSD reviews. Personally I recommend the Samsung and Intel SSDs. For HDDs I go Western digital blacks all the way.

Updated the OP with my current latest list. I'm still looking into what case I am going for, based on some advice here I downgraded the conventional drive to a normal 7200rpm and added a 500GB SSD. The major things I'm still deciding on are what OS to run and what monitor to get, because gsync monitors are not out yet I think I am going to go for a conventional 1080p monitor. Looking forward to any further comments and or suggestions.

Antec cases are usually a safe bet. I have a P280 and it's solid. You can set it up for push, pull, or push/pull and it's big enough to accommodate large coolers and gfx cards. When are gsync monitors going to be available? Q2?

I believe while they are available for preorder now they haven't said what the release date was going to be. So I would guess Q2.

Added my hopefully final build. I set pcpartpicker to only use newegg because I haven't heard of over half the merchants on that list and I have no idea how good their RMA policies are. If you have any comments or ideas please let me know. I intend to order by the end of the week.

I'd spend a little more cash on a nicer monitor.

Don't make the same mistake I made for the HDD and order an older model. New versions model numbers have a 3 and not a 1 in the 6th spot.

WD4003FZEX  SATA 6 Gb/s  3.5 Inch  7200  4 TB      64 MB
WD3003FZEX  SATA 6 Gb/s  3.5 Inch  7200  3 TB      64 MB
WD2003FZEX  SATA 6 Gb/s  3.5 Inch  7200  2 TB      64 MB
WD1003FZEX  SATA 6 Gb/s  3.5 Inch  7200  1 TB      64 MB
WD5003AZEX  SATA 6 Gb/s  3.5 Inch  7200  500 GB  64 MB

I will later after gsync monitors come out but that will be at least 6 months down the road.

I think if I am reading this correctly you will have issues with the noctua cpu cooler and ram fitting.
