Definition of a monopoly in the EU seems to be different than here, apparently market share > 70% = monopoly in EU, whereas here monopoly means owning 100% of the market share.

It also depends on the space you are talking about, I would say for the mobile OS market, they don't have a monopoly, for web mail or search engines, I would say there's definitely an argument to be made. The only alternatives to google search I can think of are Yahoo, Bing, and Duck Duck Go. And I don't think they three of those together even make up 25% of the market in the US or EU.

I was referring to the search engine market, there are also country-specific search engines out there too. But how do you split that up? Force Google to stop providing search results if it reaches "x" number of searches within a particular jurisdiction? Or force the search results to come from elsewhere?

Ultimately Google is where it's at because Google has done it the best.

Yeah, that kind of thing is something that I've heard debated on the BBC lately. Sometimes, a monopoly comes about because they're the ones doing it best, not because they're abusing the market to drive customers to them from other places. So what do you do when that happens? One of the potential solutions is change the laws in the EU regarding monopolies.

In the US this is explicitly legal.

[/quote]But in the EU it's not, at least not without getting investigated pretty thoroughly. Hence the debate.

What they'd likely do if this all passes is call for Google to split up into smaller companies. From what I understand, I don't think the monopoly is concerning search engines, it's more to do with all the other services Google owns/offers and how they work together as well. As to whether or not that will be a reality remains to be seen. Even if Google's European services do split up, I don't see that carrying over in the US assuming they don't pull out of the EU entirely.

The problem is whether some of these things are actually other products.  If I want to know the weather, I don't want to be shown a link to weather.com I just want to know the weather. If I want to know the definition of a word, I don't want to be taken to dictionary.com I just want to know what the word means.  For flights it might be a gray area. I mean most people know they can get better deals if they shop around. But sometimes I just want to know what flights are available.
