Just IT help desk (I'd say I'm prepared for frustration by reading so many horror stories but I know I'm truly not) and general office administration duties. I'll get to expand into duties in the IT department as I work there more. They're a technical staffing firm for engineers so needless to say they do a lot with databases and this branch only as one guy who does SQL (what I liked learning). I'm hoping I can get him to shrug some of that work onto me so I can get that delicious professional experience for my resume. Man, I was in pretty much the exact same situation. Just got an offer today for a software development job in DC! |

BaltiBeer 2015, the embeerening, needs to happen. 5 years after the first BaltiBeer, it definitely needs to be a thing.

Just got an offer today for a software development job in DC! [/quote]I have a story for you, matter11. So I work in that same menial IT support job you just got but I've been here for a year. Today the lab where I work opened late and HR sent out an email requesting people fill out their timesheets by 2pm, which is usually noon. Maybe 20 minutes after the email went out we experienced total site-wide network failure. Absolutely everything was down... except the VoIP system, including my helpdesk phone. So I received a good 40 or 50 calls in the span of 30 minutes asking about access to the timesheet they just got an email about (and other things). Not too bad but people are still coming to me with real issues while this is happening. We couldn't send out a sitewide alert because that system was down. Anyway after a few hours they tell me the network is fixed and all the servers are rebooting, so services will be coming up slowly. The calls haven't stopped so I tell people this, and eventually everyone gets the message and the calls stop. Fast forward an hour, and a text goes out saying that "all services have been restored", which turned out to be a filthy lie since the timesheet server was still down. So now all these people who were trying to access the timesheet in the first place have been informed that, basically, timesheet is back up and are trying to get to it and failing. Thinking (and reasonably so) that this is an individual error since clearly "all" services have been restored, about half of the people who called me during the downtime are now calling AGAIN. This in addition to people who are trying to reach a couple other services that are ALSO still down. And that was my Friday afternoon. Here is a quote from today on irc: Quote:12:44 StolenToast | lookin forward to a nice quiet afternoon That being said, this is not typical. Once you get accustomed to your office's systems and procedures it's mostly mindless changing passwords and such. And I like your SQL plan. I executed a similar scheme with redhat linux, and now I am the only intern who knows linux and they gave me sudo on most site computers and access to the red hat satellite interface. And beyond that I've learned a lot of very valuable things about enterprise computer systems which any future employer will definitely want to see. |

It's a pretty small building so maybe I'll request a megaphone to deliver branch-wide announcements. |

Being on set with Tina Fey, Martin Freeman, and Margot Robbie was kind of surreal.

tax return was deposited this morning. paid off one of my small student loans, which frees up $40 a month.
a small victory for a slightly more financially responsible zaius 'Meditation is supposedly the only way to Enlightenment because the only way to find this truth is through inner reflection - therefore, what you are finding to be the truth in your personal journey should ultimately be exactly what I find to be the truth, though all of our journeys are unique.'

I got my fucking car back. It's the cleanest it's ever been. As you can see, it now has a rear bumper. Not showing it, of course, because I don't really want to put my license plates on the forums. You guys are crazy (but mostly in a good way).
