Would my wife uploading music mess with my internet? Trying to figure out if my internet problems are due to my router or something else.

She's been uploading gigs and gigs of music for days without me knowing. I've had internet issues for roughly the same time period.

Your upload speed significantly affects your overall internet experience.

Basically if you have a longer upload this also creates a situation in which you have a longer query period time before getting a response.

Internet works like this:

You send out signal asking for a web site from the internet (upload), DNS server will return proper IP address to web site (Download), you then Query that IP Address (Upload), then the web server returns the proper web site (download).

Less reliable upload speed = less reliable internet overall on all parts of the internet.

I'm going to be moving soon and am in the market for a new router, and my soon to be cable company (time warner) also allows that I provide my own modem (instead of paying an additional leasing fee to them). I know that combination units have a history of sucking donkey balls, and I prefer Cable -> Modem -> Router -> Devices set ups anyway.

However it's been a LONG time since I've delved into purchasing a router, from what I understand pretty much everything in the Asus RT series is phenominal which is fine, but here's my budget for total networking equipment: About $200 (give or take $20). That's modem + router.

So, what are some recommendations some of you can give to me INSIDE that budget that allows me to buy both (and of course modem must be within the approved listings by Time Warner).

As of right now I will most likely NOT be getting 100mbps, but I would like to be prepped for it when it does potentially eventually come. So, sticking to 100mbps modems is best too.


If it helps, the last router I purchased was a D-Link DGL-4300... when they were the latest and greatest and they still called their packet prioritization system "GameFuel" you know... before PepsiCo trademarked that.

Optional: Go with the Asus RT-AC66U or RT-AC66R.


Do not buy Netgear, do not buy Dlink. I have never encountered ZyXEL or Zoom but they both look shitty.
If you want to get a solid router later; build a pfSense and setup the router as a Wifi AP.

Zyxel makes a decent pocket/travel router/AP combo for $25 but I wouldn't trust them with much more than that.

I do have some TP-Link power/ethernet converters I currently use and they actually work far better than the belkin ones I own.

I avoid combo-units (modem/router) like the plague because every single one I've ever dealt with (NO MATTER THE MANUFACTURER) has been absolute shit.
Zooms are shitty (I've dealt with them before).

Travel is not a concern.

The DGL D-Link series was fantastic, but thats long long gone. Also they're still closed source, unlike pretty much every other manufacturer out there.

I don't have the time or inclination to build a pfSense, I'm too lazy, plus I have plenty of other projects on my plate I don't need another.

The surboard was what I was considering on modem anyway, I kind of just wanted confirmation on that. It's more the router I'm curious about, thanks for your guys' input so far.

I went out and bought a Motorola Surfboard after the modem supplied by my ISP kept being absolute garbage. Got it hooked to a TP Link router and other than occasional drops that require resetting the router its been great.

TP-Link stuff is mostly reference design. The firmware is pretty standard.
You can always try loading DD-WRT on your TP-Link if you are having stability issues.

Also I am definitely purchasing from microcenter based on whatever is in stock in the Columbus Ohio store so that may have bearing here.

Went with the AC66U (it was the best discounted price at Microcenter when I went today. I'm going to get the actual modem closer to when we move into our new place (which is way out in august, but I'm a person who likes to prep significantly ahead of time, i can get my shit configured to set up and go.

Which by the way the Asus configuration stuff and automation is really awesome and simple to use.
