SSDs, boy oh boy!

So, with tax rebates coming soon and my computer taking 5+ minutes to boot up and even longer to get up to speed, I was wondering about SSD drives. I'll have close to $200 to spend and I'm hoping to have it replace my boot drive (currently 178 gigs, probably a lot of junk on there anyhow).

Any recommendations? Cautions?

Personally been sticking to Intel and Samsung 840 SSD's, but those are of a particular generation (about a year and ah alf to two and ah alf years old) so... newer generation ones may be better.

I had a first gen Intel and it was good but performance pooped out due to lack of Trim support. But that took 4 years. Now sporting a samsung 840 pro 512gb, been great so far.

Another vote for Intel and Samsung.

The 840s are fantastic performers, decently priced and have a very low failure rate (as reported by my lcs).
A coworker had an issue with a Samsung 840 and an older Macbook Pro. He was ecstatic about quality and level of service he got from the Samsung support line (and yes, they fixed his issue).

samsung seems to be the tried and true of the community and if i buy its probably gonna be a 500+gb model. Other suggestions welcome

Everything aside, you simply can't go wrong with the 850 pro.  I don't know about the evo version.

First, make sure the 840 Pro is 256 GB not 250 GB. The pro uses a different type of NAND. The Pro uses MLC which is older but faster. The regular 840 and the Evo use TLC which is newer and cheaper to produce. Also, the Pro's MLC NAND is supposed to last much longer. The 2nd article estimates that MLC's expected lifespan is 60 years vs 19 years for TLC. If you do not plan on using the SSD for more than a decade, this is trivial. Depending on how close the prices are, the Pro is the way to go. If the Evo 840 is significantly cheaper, it is not bad at all, I own a regular 250 GB 840 and it is very fast. If you can find a regular 830 get that, it also uses MLC. The difference between the Evo and regular is that the Evo only uses 2 "bits per cell" while the regular uses 3 bpc. This makes the Evo faster.

I've got a 240GB PRO in my computer. My only issue with it is that it's only 240GB. Space fills up really quick when you have a few big Steam games.

I've got at least one Samsung as well, 850 EVO, 250 GB. Very nice, much happier now that things load at a decent speed. I can't remember what the second SSD I have is, it's likely the same/similar.

Don't get Mushkin. I had one die on me, saw the price had dropped and doubled-down on a stupid decision because it was so cheap. One year and two more dead drives buried, I am a sad panda.

I will toss another vote in for Samsung though. Have had no complaints with my 850 so far *knocks on wood*
