Red is a great starting color if you don't feel like a pre made deck. Pretty dang cheap too depending on your format.

i guess. I'd give different advice to one seeking to build a modern deck or a standard deck though.

Standard is about as casual you can get and still win a prize for it.  Limited card pool, low barrier to skill, and still a huge monetary barrier to entry (fucking mythic rares) and even bigger to maintain since the sets keep rotating and you have to keep buying cards.  Over time, it's more expensive than Legacy and yes, I mean that.

Modern isn't much better.  Once the format matures (like, give it another five years) and they stop banning cards that players whine about, I'll give it a shot.  Right now, it's still too easy to identify "the good deck" and just isn't as exciting.  I really need a format that isn't just Rock Paper Scissors.

One of my local stores, however, is starting to run Tiny Leaders tournament.  THERE is a format where a lot of deck-building skill and playing skill is displayed.  It's like Legacy (which I didn't believe at first), but not as expensive.

And I'll always support Drafting.  Some luck, yes, but you really need to know your shit to put up a good showing every week.

My favorite option for cheap but fun play was always limited leagues - everyone gets enough packs to make a decent 40 card deck, you buy a few extra packs each session for prize cards, and everyone plays everyone else a number of times, with a single random prize card as the reward each game. My family did those a lot when I was a kid and they cost next to nothing if you work with an existing card pool(my dad would make new prize packs from cards in his collection). The downside, of course, is that you need to be able to guarantee that everyone can play semi-regularly over a long period of time.

When I played Magic online, the booster leagues were pretty fun.  It was neat to develop your deck over time. And you'd see people drop out as their records got shitty.

I wish there was a bigger Magic scene where I lived.  Drafting and sealed decks were lots of fun.

Drafting Conspiracy with friends is fun, drafting at a shop isn't as fun, at least for me. Sealed is always fun, again, at least for me. Prerelease events are the most fun I've had playing MTG with strangers. @Xineo, you're welcome to drive out here and play in prereleases with me and my local friends. We don't get together regularly to play otherwise, just here and there.

Tiny leaders is interesting to me, but I haven't figured out how to make a deck for it yet.

kek so hard.
People act like standard is a full rotation every 2 months. And seriously who wants to play a single deck for 5 years straight.

That link shows that some decks can be expensive, yes, but that hardly proves a point.  A great deal of decks can be inexpensive and even cost less than Modern or Standard decks, especially when you're replacing your decks every year.

I stopped playing Standard because I didn't want to keep up with it and spend all that money.  A lot of Standard prices are comparable to Legacy prices and have been for years.  Legacy was actually cheaper over time.  Granted, last time I played Standard was the first time we went to Zendikar, but the point remains.  Personally, I had tremendous fun playing a small selection of decks (elves, dredge, pox, belcher, and briefly, BUG Walkers) against a changing field of decks and appreciated their variety.  But that doesn't mean I needed a playset of every power card and bankrupt myself.  I actually spent less money playing Legacy than Standard.  I got more in return, too, because since Legacy is a more robust format, I didn't just lose a game of Rock Paper Scissors to some casual in a game of Standard.  Legacy is much more skill intensive (if you don't agree, you've never played), so it's much more rewarding for what I put into it.

Standard DOES have a rotation.  Cards move out and new cards move in.  Then you have to scramble to buy new cards.  Old decks don't work, so you have to replace it immediately.  It might as well be a full rotation.  You can play your neutered, crappy deck if you want, but you're going to lose if you don't keep up.  And, now with the new set up, the rotation happens even faster since there are only going to be two sets a block.

@Neptune, no base sets in that rotation, either, so yeah super fast rotation.

Did an EDH draft night on Friday out of a cube that had some serious money cards in it. Made dis: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/edh-draft-night-prossh/ , wrecked face.

He had a bunch of banned cards in there. Plus, PH isn't even that useful in that deck other than being another fatty. My cardpool ended up super light on creatures because I was snagging all the relevant color fixing and protection cards (getting the only Sol ring, lightning greaves, Swift foot boots, and spectral searchlight made it stupid easy to protect stuff early game)

I did a triple Shadows Over Innistrad draft last friday.  Made a green/black deck which had a bunch of Clue/Investigate synergy, but was weak on combat tricks and removal, both of which have been sort of key to making Green/Black work in the past.   I did pick up a relentless dead, a diregraf colossus and a tireless tracker.  OH WELL.  I did end up with two packs for my efforts, though.

If anybody is interested in the mythics/rares I opened(Relentless Dead, Mindwrack Demon, Ever After, Sage of Ancient Lore, and Tireless Tracker), PM or message me and we can work out a deal.  They'll most likely just sit on my shelf unused.
