TF2 Settings Annex: Texture Setting and Sprays

I didn't want to drop this on the Your TF2 Settings thread so I maek new topik.

I will show the impact made on sprays by the advanced video option for textures.  Helping me in this endeavor is a spray rendered for me by Geoff.

Low


The finer details of the spray are illegible.  The artistic merit of the spray is totally lost in the muddy lack of detail afforded it by this setting.


Medium


This is an improvement.  The spray comes into focus.  You can now read messages rendered in smaller fonts and note finer details of the spray save for the most diminutive ("By Geoff" here) .  Of course, the environment textures get a boost but they're irrelevant.


High


Here we are.  I believe sprays are at maximum clarity when Textures are at High.  The artist's message is clearly conveyed with this setting.  The majority of the environment is also improved so as not to clash with the quality of the spray.


Very High


Can you see the difference?  A bit of gravel on the ground sharpened up.  Otherwise, this poster detects no difference between this frame and the prior.


I urge anyone with Textures set to Low to try to discover some other processing power savings to consider and bump Textures to at least Medium!  Otherwise, you are missing one of the key sources of entertainment on our fine server!

I'll volunteer myself as the first subject for this marvelous, selfless endeavour of this community.  Each day of my TF2 life is spent suffering through the lowest of resolutions.  Resolution and graphical settings that you may take for granted could actually only be dreamt of for me.  Simple features, like the server chalkboard, are completely illegible and pixelated for my computer's safety.  For only a bit of extra processing power a day, you can make a difference!  Hell, I'd EAT furry porn for an upgrade.  Operators are standing by.

Just a thought Black Aspen, but have you tried lowering the direct x level? I had to run with a shitty resolution as well, but lowering the direct x level helped. It makes the game less pretty, but really does a lot of good for the frame rate, and you can run at a higher resolution. If you haven't tried this yet  right click on Team fortress 2 from your steam games list, go to properties, then go to set launch options. From there you can either enter "-dxlevel 81" or "-dxlevel 80". Try 81 first, but if your still needing a better frame rate then you may have to lower it to 80. Just a thought.

Also these screen shots are making me wanna try tweaking my settings to see how high I could go without a performance loss.  I've become a "graphics don't matter" kinda guy in my old age (25) and never bothered much with the settings, but damn those look perty.

@Vandamguy.  Oh, I know how to build my own computer, I just can't afford to right now, heh.  I was all set to go and buy, buy, buy, but I then got a reasonably large bill from school that is leeching all my income at the moment.  But this doesn't matter than much anymore because.....

@Yomanz.  YOU ARE A GOD TO ME.  You wouldn't BELIEVE how much better TF2 runs for me now.  I can actually run in a decent resolution now!  Not only that, but TF2 already looks better, and runs SMOOTHER than it did before.  You, Sir, truely are my hero and very much appreciate your divine words.  It'll actually let me put off buying a new system now for awhile longer, which is a good thing.  Much, much thanks to you.

Glad my advice helped Black Aspen. Also if you want to run TF2 with higher settings in the future, you may not have to replace your entire system. Since lowering the direct x level is what helped make TF2 run better, all you should need to improve upon is your graphics card. I can't say if that is it for sure but it's a safe bet. If you post the stats for your current computer i'd be able to tell for sure what would need improving. If you decide to get a new graphics card, newegg.com is a great place to get them, or you could take up Vandamguy on his offer.
