Just a cross-post, but the turds over there didn't get me any help, so I turn to my true brothers-in-arms to possibly help us win a system or something.  You can only play so much PS2 before you wish you were playing Rock Band.

Hah, i was a nerd enough to start a CCG club when i was in 7th grade.

Of course this was in 1995, when it was fucking cool to play magic the gathering.

Just a tip, when calling local people for sponsorships make sure you frame it in ways that make their advantages apparent. So check if they can get tax deductions for donations and if you do events offer them advertising space on the programs or make banners or T-shirts with their logos. If you can get in their heads before you pitch to them you cab be very successful. Like a local game shop could get a write off, broad advertising with their logo or banner on something, and targetted advertising to your kids and their parents for when they want to get stuff for themselves. The trick is walking the line between laying out all these advantages but in a subtle way so they can still feel good about themselves for committing a "selfless" act.

Edit: god trying to develop an idea on a phone does not work, anyways my wife just went through something similar for a no budget event for the library and she got a lot of comic books donated for free. Realistically the guy got to clear out overstock and maybe get a write-off, but it still helps the kids.

You would have to think that having a gaming store donate some board games and stuff would be a big plus for them.

It would be like some dealer donating an eight-ball to some poor soul out of the kindness of their own heart and handing them a card where they can score more once school is out.

I dunno how much you're willing to maybe spend out of pocket, but perhaps you could find a permanent system on the cheep at like a Goodwill or Salvation Army or a pawnshop if you really want to.  Also, armegedtron for the computers.

Alternatively, try inviting someone from one of those stores out to enjoy one of your events. Perhaps if they enjoy themselves enough (read: see enough commercial opportunities) they might be convinced to help out and sponsor a little something something (or something). Offer to let them sell small stuff (think used games or CCGs, etc) in exchange for helping out with the events. The chances of them laughing at the proposal are probably pretty high, and accepting it extremely low, but it certainly wouldn't be the worst thing ever sold out of the trunk of a car in a high school parking lot.

from what i hear it's mostly since they refused to deal in manga.  Most of my students are more into manga than american comicbooks

American comics are more for the older crowd that grew up with them anyway. It's pretty difficult to get into comics there days since they're so fucking intertwined.

Superhero comics, yes, but there are so many great non-superhero American comics (*ahem*) to choose from. But these damn kids these days would rather read shitty, derivative manga that draws from a very small set of overused character archetypes and story structures. Not that all manga is bad; just all the stuff junior high kids pick up because all their friends read them and it's funny because you have to turn the pages backwards.

And I'm only twenty years old. I shouldn't have to use the phrase "damn kids these days" for at least another ten years.

I was telling my friend whose about to get married that today's comics are too good for kids, so our children will have to learn to love superheros by reading shitty Chris Claremont issues like we did.
