So my adapter for my laptop died. It's a 120W with 100-240V, 2A, 50-60Hz input and 19V, 6.32A output.
I have a 90W, 100-240V, 1.4A, 50-60Hz input and 19V, 4.74A output backup adapter. It works, but it (obviously) stops working after around 20 minutes. Should I use this until my replacement arrives? Will it catch fire/blow up/end the world? Edit: My 120W works if I hold it a certain way, resting on a box angled upwards... is that a problem with the adapter or the actual plug in the PC? The 90W works fine no matter how it's plugged in... so idk.

You prolly broke the wire inside the plug. That happens to laptops at work all the time.
We just slice them open with a razor blade and solder them back together. Apply hot glue and you're done. Then again we just order new ones and keep the fixed ones as spares. Otherwise eBay, get a cloned PSU for <$30. |

Well seeing as I don't have the pin from inside, I can't exactly fix it. At least I know it's only a problem with the plug and not inside my laptop. ;D

I agree with HeK, you can try to repair it but you're almost better off just buying a new one.
On a side note, I thought this thread was a request for a tutorial on active power supplies, a topic I'm qualified to comment on ;x but alas, trying to explain how awesome (and difficult) it is to regulate output voltage with minimum ripple and an unknown input voltage is irrelevant in this case. ![]() "If you want to be a Double E, bend over and grab your knees...."
