My intro thread yesterday evolved into a discussion on editing software, and I found that a lot of people actually into making films like me. So I was wondering what software and equipment people prefer to use when making a film?

(Also I'm not sure if this is the right place or not to post this... So bear with me. )

I don't actually make films, just provide technical services. I think the best up and coming software is Lightworks by Editshare. It's in free beta right now and I believe it will remain free after release. The idea being that it integrates with their shared storage which is phenomenal regardless of what software you use. Share projects with Avid, FCP, whatever. Not to mention they offer some of the best support I've ever seen in the post industry.

Lightworks is a NLE. Check it out here. It's pretty slick. OSX and Linux support coming later this year as well as Black Magic and AJA support next year. It's actually been around since the late 80's, just kind of fell by the wayside and Editshare snatched it up. Given how fast people are adopting their storage I wouldn't be surprised if it became the industry standard in the next five years especially given Apple's recent FCPX blunder and Avid's upgrade path.

AVID Media Composer 6 is the only way to go

Unfortunately, their complete bungling of the workflow has made it very unattractive to upgrade to. For post, After Effects is always a winner, but there are a lot of other options out there. The real trick is to just find something you feel comfortable with, and learn it really well. That's the key to an efficient process, regardless of what software it is.

I have to agree... But sometimes you just can't help but hate a program... and I'm sticking with FCP 7 in hopes that they'll eventually release 8.

Haven't gotten to toy around with Final Cut enough to finalize my thoughts, but AVID does seem to be the standard right now.

By numbers, Avid is the industry standard, but by recruitment, more post-houses are looking for FCP editors. If Apple gets their game together and makes a FCP 8 and turns FCPX into what it is (an overhyped iMovie), they could stand to take over the industry.

In my experience broadcast facilities and higher end post houses use Avid, some of them dual boot FCP but it's only really there for clients that require it. Apple's decision to dump FCS, Xserve, and Xserve RAID (and possibly the Mac Pro line) was pretty stupid because they were gaining ground. A lot of it might have been because it had a cheaper cost of entry compared to Avid a few years ago, and a lot of schools bought into it. Not to mention they were really developing a product that worked. If they decided to update the Mac Pro and make a FCP version that's less terrible then I can see them competing. I don't know about taking over the industry though. The real problems I've had with FCP have been the editors. Not to say that Avid editors are any better, but I've met way more Avid editors who knew their shit versus FCP cutters. Probably because most of the good Avid people have been doing it since before ABVB was around. In general all video editors are kind of terrible. I'm pretty sure most of them can't even read a scope anymore.
