Building a Sentry..er..computer. - Neonie - 05-20-2008

=======================

Neonie already has:
LCD Monitor
Athlon 64 3200+ socket 754 processor
a GeForce 8500GT
cooler for the processor

=======================

Neonie NEEDS:
motherboard
RAM
harddrive
power supply
case        -Neonie's got this covered
optical drive

=======================

Shipping Adress: (lulz, spelling)

925 Mosiac Dr
Fort Worth, TX 76179
hounestly I don't want anyone sending anything yet, it's not my permanant adress (lulz moar spelling)

=======================

First off, Neonie said to wait on the parts. Neonie, do you still want us to wait, or can we start shipping stuff? Say when and where!

Since computer parts aren't the most modular things in the world, make sure what you send will be compatible with what Neonie has. For example, the processor is a 754 socket. So the motherboard has to be socket 754. I'm assuming the 8500GT is PCI-E x 16, I don't think they make anything else (Someone ask Ceceil or Neonie to make sure please), so the Motherboard also has to have a PCI-E x 16 slot on it. A socket 754 motherboard is a little hard to come by, if anyone has one they're willing to part with, speak now please. Otherwise, you'll have to start shopping for one, and they don't make those anymore, so you have to get a refurb. There's only (1) listed on Newegg, (2) on Tigerdirect.

When you send him something, cross it off the list. It'll make tracking this all a lot easier.

Quoted directly from Duck him Self.

Caffine asked me to make an entirly new thread for this so I did

The adress is as follows:

Neonie
3020 bedford Road
Apt #1213
Bedford, Texas 76021

The reason you are sending the parts to "Neonie" and not my real name is becuase if you sent them to my real name they would get re-directed to Louisiana becuase of a chnage of adress form I filled out a couple of months ago.

Oh and you can start sending stuff now by the way, since it's my and my sisters apartment we can do whatever we want with it so ya.

Ill toss you a DVD burner later this week

What you really need is a motherboard above all else, because the RAM you get is dependent on it

I would help if I could but I always sell what I'm not using to make up for the expensive shit I buy Big Grin

Ditto on what Caff said about the mobo being very important as a deciding factor on the other components.  IE will you have a mobo with SATA?  What type of CD Drive do you need IDE?  SATA?  You could always just get all IDE drives and storage because every motherboard will have these interfaces.

Good luck and let me know if you need any help or have any problems.

Re: Building a Sentry..er..computer. - Wedge - 05-20-2008

Actually yeah, the mobo is going to be really weird.  That's a pretty old processor socket, but that's a PCI-E video card I assume?  So would have to find an older mobo that supported PCI-E I guess?  I used to have an extra PSU around, most of my other stuff is junk though =X.

Re: Building a Sentry..er..computer. - copulatingduck - 05-20-2008

Yea, I don't think the processor will actually get used. The problem is like Wedge said: it's old as hell. I doubt anyone has one laying around, so if you're going to bother buying a new motherboard, you might as well get a nice one with a decent processor and future-proof it for a while.

I hear that if you hit the case with a wrench it'll build twice as fast.

Re: Building a Sentry..er..computer. - Ceceil Felias - 05-27-2008

Regarding availability of socket 754 hardware, eBay has a whole bunch of a certain brand of motherboard that could potentially work (and for rather cheap), so if funds are too short we can still go with the 754 plan.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?satitle=ASRock+K8NF4G

It's a similar design to my old and trusty Biostar T-Force motherboard, so aside from the eh-ishness of ASRock, I can confirm that it isn't a bad chipset.

I just remembered my stepdad has a spare AM2 Athlon 64 that's rated the same as my 754 one, which I'm sure he'll be willing to give. I think it might be a bit lower clockspeed, but it runs better all the same. We don't have to be constrained with legacy motherboards! XD

Also, I have a box that can hold the monitor. I'll be able to ship the stuff soon.

So AM2 Mobo? Would be much better than 754 Tongue

Funny I didnt know they made single core AM2 chips (aside from the really high end single cores FX Chips when AM2 first came out)

Indeed they do! My stepdad got it as a package deal and used something else entirely, though. xD

Re: Building a Sentry..er..computer. - Ceceil Felias - 06-11-2008

Bump, with confirmation of AM2 processor. It's even better than I thought -- not a 3200+, but a 3800+. This will prove even better for gaming.

I also need to discuss a couple of things with Neonie.
