I'd like to get something under for $100, cheaper is better. Don't necessarily need a lot of room, 250GB should be enough, but less would be ok if it was cheap enough. Any ideas?

Yeah, for a Final Cut Pro class. The instructor said Firewire is faster than USB with Macs.

I like G-Technology stuff. I think the cheapest one they have though is 160GB for $120USD. Give 'em a look.

Do macs not use usb 2, or is firewire just better on macs?

They have USB2, but Firewire has better sustained throughput. Firewire devices use a peer to peer architecture whereas USB is master-slave. So for Firewire the devices can negotiate bus conflicts and decide which device to control the data transfer. For USB, the host handles all arbitrary functions which means more overhead and slower data transfer control.

Exactly this. This isn't apple specific though, this goes for all OSes. Firewire is a nice protocol for external storage... always has been. It's just a little more expensive because it needs controllers in all peripherals. The 'max speed' in USB specs is always burst speed while in firewire it's 'sustained' speed. But then again Mission already said that. Wink

Would you rather a hard drive with 500 reviews, 499 of which are idiots going "OMG THIS HARD DRIVE IS BIG I LIKE IT +" or "OMG I BOUGHT THIS AND THE FIREWIRE PLUG DOESN'T FIT IN MY USB PORT -"?

You've got a month to return it to newegg and a year warranty. Of course you can always spend 100$ more for a namebrand.

I can't imagine that the 500GB is that different from the 1TB model in terms of quality.
