1500 isn't terrible for a high end build.
I built my current build 3 years ago for 1500, and it came with a 19 inch monitor and 7600GS SLI... and an AMD athlon 3500+
Still manages Was able to run Team Fortress 2 on full settings at about 40 fps.
The build even included a surround sound system (5.1)

Well I plan on buying a bluray drive later on so they'd look awesome on the 24 inch display.

I will also reuse a couple of parts from my old system too, like my wireless card and sound card, dvd drive and probably some other stuff.

I would advise against getting the 1TB drive. Get 2 smaller drives instead. The >>500GB drives have been having much higher failure rates so far  :/

(not that I can see a need for 1TB unless you're doing video editting; if it's simply for backup, I doubly suggest multiple smaller drives in RAID 1)

Quad cores are mostly for suckers with more money than sense, spend the same amount of money on a dual core instead and you'll most likely be a LOT happier with your performance. But if you know you can actually utilize all 4 cores, go for it, I know I couldn't.

edit: At the very least go with Seagate. They've got a better 5-yr warranty on their drives than the 3-yr WD offers. Warranties are the most under-appreciated bit when people buy hardware :/

This is just a random example to show you what you can get with that kind of price range.  I think I'm getting stuff like the case and all that for free with mine, but seriously, you can get a really nice system for $700 range.  And paying $400 for a monitor is dumb when you can pick up an awesome professional CRT with better image quality than any LCD for $20-50 off Craigslist <3.  I'm a superjew when it comes to buying stuff though, so if you can afford nicer sleeker stuff then go for it.

First off the Q6600 isn't your best choice for a gaming processor, dual core is still the sweet spot.  Unless multitasking is a huge part of your computer usage and you are on Vista, I would get a faster dual core if you just want to game.

Also are you sure you want to go the TN Panel route for your monitor?  S-PVA looks so much better and the technology has finally caught TN in terms of response time.  However S-PVA normally cost at least 2x as much, so this is a budget question. I use TN Panels every day at work and I go home to my S-PVA, it's like night and day.

The GPU is a good choice for a budget, I have the same card and it screams.  If you want information on overclocking and/or volt-modding the G92 just let me know.

Also to the guy recommending the 9800GTX, have you ever looked at the specs?  It is the EXACT same video card that he is already getting.

PVA (patterned vertical alignment) and S-PVA (super patterned vertical alignment) are alternative versions of MVA technology offered by Samsung. PVA and S-PVA offer good black depth and wide viewing angles and S-PVA also offers fast response times using modern RTC technologies.

Basically S-PVA gives a superior picture due to it being a 8bit display (not 6) and most support 1080p Hi-Def content (in the 24"+ range), mine even has a HDMI port that I use with my HD Cable Box.

I replaced alot of the expensive parts with cheaper, arguably better, parts.
I also downgraded the 24 inch monitor to a 22, but upped the 8800GTS to a 9800GX2 (the dual core one X3)
It may be a couple dollars less than the original build, too.

EDIT: I also added a DVI cable for my older monitor (it supports DVI, but it's using VGA) so I can use dual monitors.
Perhaps a reason to start playing SupCom again?
