I'd forgotten; Claymore is pretty interesting too, though I wouldn't call it BEST.

Please, help crow by suggesting what he should watch next, as he has run out of fresh anime.  I'm looking for something on the long side, I've heard good things about Naruto, Inuyasha, and DBZ, so first person to say Naruto, Inuyasha or DBZ gets added to autoapplaud list.

I'd have to recommend Naruto, Inuyasha, and DBZ.

Bleach up until the part with that little bitch that plays tricks on everyone.

What hawtpawkit said. At that point in the series just skip past all the episodes involving "bounto" or whatever they're called. The section after that it gets good again.

Another reason why not to watch anime.  Ever since the "bounto" arc hit in Bleach the anime was so terrible to watch.  Now the manga is just kicking ass.  You get to learn why Urahara and Yourichi are on earth and so forth.

right now my to do list is:
Desert Punk
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan
Maybe last exile

WATCH THAT.  It's awesome.

Quirky favourite of mine is Planetes.  It's a realistic take on space travel in the near future.  Top notch animation quality, and great stories.

Fuck yea Last Exile, it was like...Victorian Era airship combat :O

Did they/are they ever going to finish the anime, or is it just gonna sit at that bitch of a cliffhanger they left it on a few years back? I know the manga goes/is going a lot further. Enjoyed it though, if for nothing more than the mindless bloody battles. :|

I kid, put down the torches and pitchforks.

PS: I did catch Zoso watching it through his scope looking into Jorge's apartment though.

Also, I fear for Code Geass's unblemished state of awesome now that it's on Adult Swim. I just can't help but worry that it'll create a whole bunch of dubbie fantards drooling all over Mr. Red Ranger.
Geass actually seems kinda tacky to me.  But so does Deathnote.  It could just be that I'm sick of hearing the same voice actors on all the adult swim stuff.[/quote]
Adult Swim makes anything tacky. Hell, dubs do in general.

Also, on the note of Last Exile, it should be watched, for it is awesome and all sorts of quirky. I luv it. <3

And I'm going to make a suggestion for Aim For The Top! Gunbuster while I'm making another post here. That's a real Gainax classic. Better than Evangelion. *ducks*

I never watched much anime, I prefer American cartoons. The only series that compelled me to watch all the way through were Dragonball, Lain, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Pokemon is still fun to watch. I've never seen Fist of the North Star, but I really enjoyed reading the manga. I've also heard Prince of Tennis is good.

I got my wife into anime and now we watch a lot.  Right now we are watching Trinity Blood, it's pretty good at times.  It's very derivative though: like Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing and Trigun put together.

Anyways top picks would be anything by the people that did Cowboy Bebop (Samaria Champloo, Wolf's Rain), anything by studio Ghibli for a disney kinda anime, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, Outlaw Star is great for another space cowboy themed anime, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzamuya if fucking fantastic if you watch anime because it manages to make fun of anime and yet be a good anime in and of itself (like a Terry Pratchett book).  If you see it though watch episode zero last or not at all.  It's painful to watch if you don't know much about the show and characters.

I'm sure there are plenty others I could suggest, and probably will later.  I just didn't want to be too redundant with other people's posts.

They don't fucking make good cartoons like they used too.  Have you noticed it's all like Ren & Stimpy clones out these days?  The Pixar shorts are fantastic examples of the good old days of cartoons.  Even in the half hour format Hanna Barbara blew most of the shit they have now out of the water.

I'll make an exception for Foster's, that show is pretty good.

Yeah.  Camp Lazlo was alright, only because of hidden jokes, and was made by the Rocko's modern life guy.  I could probably think of more, because there are some good ones.

Some of the old Nicktoons were alright, going back and watching Ren and Stimpy makes me wonder how they ever got away with some of that shit in the first place, so lewd  :o

it has masks and body piercing deathblows and the animation is top notch like samurai champloo (same studio) and therefore rocks. episode 11 for crazy shit. +1 for for radiohead outro. gorgeous opening here

berserk is nice too

animes are generally better when they don't have a manga counterpart or a manga counterpart released prior to the anime's.
I think i've seen some episodes of ergo proxy on TV before, at a glance, the plot reminded me alot of bubblegum crisis.  There must be a remake of berserk out there, the stuff I've got is 80s looking and not that great.  I'm going to have to agree with the statement on manga, though I wish when they started making the anime they'd go ahead and commit to the entire run and not tease us with 1 or 2 story arcs from a great world.

with all the (obligatory/expected) Full Metal Alchemist praise, I'm surprised no one's really talked about Bones' other projects other than a brief pass at Wolf's Rain by Surf.  I take it no one especially enjoyed Eureka 7?  I thought it was pretty fricken good, but I'm a fan of Bildungsromans.  Actually looking over their list of work on wikipedia, there might be some potential here for alot more anime to the list.

Which one did you watch, the subtitled or dubbed one?

FMA is a big example of an anime best watched with subtitles as not only does the dubbing suck, it completely changes the mood of the whole damn show.

I the english dubbed one was cut to be like yu-gi-oh or some shit and then I noticed scene for scene it was basically as I remembered.  But the voices made it lighthearted and silly even when it was meant to be serious.  Annoyed the crap out of me.

Subbed anime is bearable, but manga will always be where that shit is at.

Don't google Onemanga and search for some of the mangas mentioned here... Wait, this isn't Destructoid. http://www.onemanga.com/directory/
