Heck, even before I was behind a proper router, I had no real virus concerns. :B

It's not a proper router unless it's running an IOS.
And does stateful checking...

It running pf makes it quite a decent router though... I find Cisco a bit overkill for home and I don't really like the acl syntax either.

the cisco IOS is a bit over kill for home users, my linksys home router is just fine atm.

I prefer a cheap and silent PC with OpenBSD myself, great firewall/routing software in that little OS...

plus without my NAT being open xbox live is garbage to me

Smoothwall is a wonderful linux-based gateway platform. Very easy to use for the novice.

AVG antivirus, Zone Alarm firewall and Adaware ad sweeper.  Not infallible by any means, but will probably disuade most ppl unless someone really wants into my computer for some reason.

<+Karrde> welp, time to learn some basic patterning skills
<@Negate> 12121212121212121212
<@Negate> there is a simple pattern
<+Karrde> I changed my mind.  Gonna cosplay as a gay demon from hell and get negate raped instead XD
<+Caffeine`work> Karrde: Gay demon? Why would you need to cosplay just go as yourself
<+FlyingMongoose> Caffeine`work: Karrde would actually have to tone it down some.

My desktops/laptops are windows, everything else is Unix/Linux. I dual boot Suse on one of my work laptops, but that's more for fun then anything productive.

I run windows on my desktop which is mainly for gaming and Ubuntu on my laptop which I only work from... Servers are mostly BSD and sometimes linux.

All three not really needed if you have a nice router/firewall... Having a virus scanner for if you absolutely have to open some shady file is good but the best advice is just not to open any shady stuff... Application firewalls are the same thing, the most important thing is that your windows machine isn't the internet facing machine... It's a waste of resources to have all that stuff running in the background...

Bump, because good computing practices only get you so far. My boss sent me some files to work on. Unfortunately, he forwarded them from an infected machine at work (now an entire cluster is infected as well). That's what happens when you let stupid undergrads work for you I guess. One of the other idiots I worked with wrecked 3 computers before he left, and now my desktop and thumbdrive are a mess.

sighs

I guess I'll finally go ahead and install ClamWin now that I've got my clean install going. Sad

Not just your good computing practices count but also the people in the chain of trust... If someone you trust fails and you trust his files... nuff said
