FOV: the cheap way to increase your peripheral vision!  Damn, I had several screenshots that compared the effects of 4:3 / 16:10 and FOV on both, but I seem to have lost them.  If I find / remake them, I'll post them here.  They made it apparent how much FOV 90 gets you.

Actually this occurs to me why a lot of people may seem to lack "battlefield awareness" as it were, when they're running the default 75 fov.

I do suddenly feel unblinkered, as it were. I'm a little at a loss as to the downsides.

Targets look smaller on-screen? Small dip in performance maybe?

I can't deal with a high FOV. Nothing every makes me sick while playing games, even cloverfield didn't make me sick, but the instant it starts to rise, I feel my stomach churning.

1280x1028 with my real computer, because I have an old monitor, but with a 2ms response time YEAH.

Field of View write up at the Valve Developer Wiki.

I *am* going to remake those comparison images.  Stay tuned.

Below are four screenshots.

First two are at 1024 x 768.  This is screen ratio 4 : 3 , "normal" screen .  The first is FOV (field of view) 75, and the second is 90.

The second two are at 1440 x 900.  This is screen ratio 16 : 10 , widescreen.  Again, first is FOV 75, the second is FOV 90.

1024 x 768, fov 75

1024 x 768, fov 90
[Image: 1024x768fov90.jpg]

1440 x 900, fov 75

1440 x 900, fov 90
[Image: 1440x900fov90.jpg]

You'll notice the "widescreen" ones are the same width as the other two and appear horizontally squished.  An image resolution limit, either on the forum or Photobucket, is doing that--never mind that for now.

I want you to look at the difference in the visual elements seen on the sides of the images.  Notice the difference between the FOV settings between #1 and #2, and #3 and #4.  Notice also how the entrance to the base seems further away when you adjust FOV higher.

Then, notice the similarities between image #2 and image #3.  1024 x 768 at fov 90 shows about as much on the sides as 1440 x 900 at fov 75.  The biggest difference, of course, is between 1024 fov 75 and 1440 fov 90.

Below are links to #2 and #3 which may appear at proper resolution on your screen.

Nice work! I didn't notice a difference when I put my FoV to 90, but it is clearly gives an edge when the pictures are compared like that.

Quote:Motion Sickness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_sickness) : Smaller FOVs tend to exaggerate camera movement, whilst larger FOVs tend to minimise its effect on the image. Thus setting a wider FOV can sometimes help to reduce Motion Sickness during gameplay. If you are experiencing such problems in Half-Life 2, try changing the FOV to 90 using the command "sv_cheats 1;fov 90" in the console.

I'm not sure what makes you sick with a higher FOV then, unless it's the distortion?  But you really can't notice that at 90... at least I can't.

This might be an interesting experiment to try.

In Console, set up these bindings for keys O and P:
Code:
bind o "fov_desired 75"
Code:
bind p "fov_desired 90"

Then, go to someplace with an interesting floor.  I tried this on the ledge outside of Mach 4's entrance while looking down into the lower area.  Look down at it, and hit the O key to get FOV 75.  Slowly pan up with your mouse.  Watch the bottom edge of the screen as the floor falls away from your view.

Then... look down again, hit P to get FOV 90, and do it again.  Do it very, very slowly, and watch how the terrain shapes for the ledge and whatever else tend to 'warp'.

I'm no expert, but the warping effect may get to people when they're spinning their view around.

90° FOV screws with me on my normal 1280x1024 resolution. It might work better on widescreen, since there's more to look left and right at, but on a 5:4 monitor it's awful. Hell, whatever Garry's Mod has set (and whatever I'd like to CHANGE) is already bad enough. :/

Plus the ridiculously high FOVs that Warsow has are just mindmelting to me. I guess I'm just not a total FPS person like you guys. x.x

I remember playing against a Tribes player that used 120 FOV @_@.

I had qwtf clan-mates who played as wide as 130.
I had a script that bound my mousewheel to zoom in and out with fov.
