Protip:

Closing explorer.exe and running it again is passable for half of the programs that ask you to do a reboot to load them fully.
Or you can just reboot, since on a fresh install it doesn't take all that long.

Tell that to 3TB worth of hard drives.

When I stopped playing SupCom for a year I discovered they did like 15-20 updates to thier multiplayer client during that year, and when I went to go play some of it again, I had to sit through every update.

After every.  Single.  Damn.  Update.  The program did a forced-reset on 5 minute timer   :|

Took me about two hours to finally finish all the updates, especailly since I can't just reset my computer, I have to do a cold-boot otherwise my keyboard doesn't work.

The explorer trick also often keeps timer restart programs from doing so.

The explorer trick is not an acceptable replacement for a proper reboot as rebooting will reload your registry, register DLLs, etc.
When performing operating system updates, please perform a clean reboot.

Oh hey, see, what I completely forgot is that you will never reboot your computer again after you install your programs, so you absolutely MUST do a clean reboot every time.

I also forgot that reloading explorer.exe does not reload your registry.

Oh wait...

Supreme Commander is not an OS update.  At least I'd hope not.

Srsly though, unless it's drivers or some serious software, most things are not gonna be in dire need of a full reboot.

Oh wait...

You do know that explorer is a shell and is not directly related to security or access policies, the windows kernel, it's libraries or registry.
You can even replace explorer with another shell and still have a fully functional workstation, without ever running explorer.exe.

Restarting explorer.exe only allows the shell to reload the registry, something that rarely impacts what you have just installed.

If you are interested to learn more, please read about the COM-model, how Microsoft implements it and how it related to dynamic libraries.

[/quote]This. Additionally, even if restarting explorer refreshes HKEY_CURRENT_USER, that's not the whole registry, so you're wrong even with your own backup, Blues.

I can see his title, just as well as I can see that he bypasses common sense and selectively argues to prove his "points".

To at0m, I'm not even going to bother, you don't belong in a computer thread telling ANYONE they're talking out of their ass. Get the fuck out of here, Butthurt. Big Grin

HeK, way to ignore what was actually said in an attempt to feed your circlejerk ego. Since I started off stating that the explorer trick works for about half the programs you install, and never once stated anything about system updates, maybe you should take this call from logical fallacy, it's for you. The point was to help the kid fly through his installs before hitting stuff like drivers and actual windows updates without having to restart the computer every minute. If you want to go argue inane specifics that have no actual impact over the 20 minute period he'll be doing updates, go visit a Microsoft forum.

I read this entire thing assuming we were talking about system updates. I guess it might just be my amazing sense of intuition.

See I think you were trying to make a counter-point, but since you bolded the part where he said they were already installed, you're sort of just validating my quote.

Here is this thread process:

Posts about formatting and new OS installation
Posts about updating windows and beginning to install random programs + having to restart
Protip about explorer trick
Rage about specifics that no longer apply

Reloading the shell does not supplement a full restart, though it most likely is sufficient enough.
